Bette greeted Jack and Mary when they arrived at the gallery. She had been standing talking to James who was trying to do some paperwork but couldn’t because Bette was around and getting under his feet.
“Hello – what’s the roads like?”
“Busy “Jack said “I am not sure I can get my head around how crazy driving has become “
“The roads were not that bad “Mary said smiling at her husband “Jack is a worrier when it comes to driving on highways “
“You drive like a crazy person – it wasn’t some back road in Carolina “
Mary pulled a face “He hasn’t got over the fact that I am a better driver “
“Only because you won’t let me! “He objected
Bette laughed “Which one of you taught Tina to drive?”
    “I did “Mary said
“We had only been a couple for about 6 months and my pride and joy was my car – she wanted to drive it and I let her “
    “She pinged it?”
“She bumped it “Bette nodded “But to be fair I probably had made her so nervous that it was my fault more than hers. She’s actually had less accidents than me – she’s a good driver”
    Mary smiled “Thank you “
“Do I take it that I am being ganged up on?”
“No Jack – that will happen when your daughter and grand-daughter arrive and you will know all about it”
Jack looked like nothing would make him happier.
“I woke up this morning and it was the first thought that came into my head – that we would meet our grand-daughter today “
Bette looked at Mary “We are both really excited “
“So is Angie – come on to my office and we can have some coffee “
“I am not sure that Jack should be having caffeine “
Bette laughed as they walked to Bette’s office. Bette settled Jack and Mary down and chatted to them. Finally she sat down
    “Angie talks a lot “
    “So did Tina “
Bette smiled “You should tell Angie that because Tina is always trying to stop her talking so much “
“She just sounds like she’s adorable “

“I am biased but she is – she’s nearly 6 and has a reading age of nearly 8. She is clever but she still is a little girl”
Mary nodded “On the drive we were talking about what Tina was like when she was six “
Bette smiled “That is a conversation I am looking forward to “
Just as Bette was taking a drink of her coffee her desk phone rang. She leant over and picked it up
    “Hello James – good – thanks “
Bette put the phone down “You are about to meet your grand-daughter – Tina and Angie are here – just relax “
In a few minutes the door opened and Tina and Angie came in. Angie looked really sweet Bette thought – she was wearing jeans, black boots and a warm red fleece jacket – a gray scarf was wrapped round her neck.
    “Hey mom, dad “
    “Hello darling “
Angie looked shy – she moved close to Tina who put her hand on her daughter’s shoulder
“Angie sweetie – these are your grandparents – mom – dad – this is Angie”
    “Hello “Mary said smiling
“Hi “Angie said looking at the two older adults
    “Hello Angie “
    “Hello”
    “Hey pumpkin “Bette said
    “Hey mommy “
    Angie was quiet
“Do you want a coffee Tina babe?”
“Yes please – what would you like to drink Nag?”
Bette had put a couple of bottles of flavored water on the tray – she guessed that Angie would go for that
    “Can I have the water?”
“Of course – take which one you want “
Tina removed her coat and nodded at Angie to do the same. Angie was still watching her grandparents. Mary took her bag and opened it – she removed an envelope and took out a picture
“I thought you might like to see this picture Bette “
Bette stood up and took the picture and grinned “Hey Angie – come here”
Angie came across and stood beside Bette. Bette showed Angie the picture
    “Guess who that is “
Angie looked at the little girl and smiled
    “Mommy “
“What!! “ Tina exclaimed “What is that picture?”
“I just thought that Bette would like to see a picture of you when you were Angie’s age “
“Let me see “Tina made a snatch for the picture but Bette moved the photo out of Tina’s reach.
    “What do you think Angie?”
    “Pigtails?” Angie exclaimed
“Yeah – well pointed out – pigtails babe “
“And braces for her teeth “
Angie smiled, Bette put an arm around her daughter
“What do you think of mommy?”
“You look better now mom “
“Gee thanks “Tina said smiling “Thanks mom “
“I have brought more – do you want to see them Angie?”
    Angie nodded and moved across.
“Don’t forget your water “Tina said. Angie picked her bottle up and tried to remove the cap. She frowned as she kept failing. Jack caught Bette’s eye – the brunette nodded
“Would you like me to do that for you Angie?”
Angie looked at him with her deep, dark eyes and nodded – she was still wary. Jack took the bottle and with a twist opened it – he handed it back to her
    “Thank you “
    “My pleasure “
For the third time photographs broke the ice. Mary was explaining the pictures – one of them was of Tina with two cats
“You never said you had cat’s mommy “
“They were really farm cats – they caught mice “
“We have a cat “Angie told her grandmother
“Do you? What kind is it?”
“She is called Sheba and after my birthday I am getting another cat from the shelter. It’s my birthday in December “
    “How old will you be?”
    “I will be 6 “
“What do you want for your birthday?”
“Some talking books and my mommies are taking me away when they go on their honeymoon. Did you know they are getting married?”
“Yes – I think it’s wonderful “Jack said
“Are you coming to the wedding? – James is going to be there and so is Peggy “
It was an awkward moment as thought Bette and Tina had discussed inviting her parents they had not talked to them about it yet.
“I don’t know – we might be working “Mary said. Bette and Tina exchanged looks.
“We can talk about it later mom “Tina said
Jack recognized the awkwardness “When your mom asked us where we would like to go I said that I have always wanted to see the meteorites at the Natural History museum. Do you mind if we go there?”
Angie smiled – for the first time her grandparents saw Angie’s beaming smile
“I love going there – we have a family pass “
“Do you?” Jack said faking shock at this news
    “I love the dinosaurs “
“Would that be okay with you Mary?”
“I would like to see the dinosaurs “Mary admitted
Bette winked at Tina who was looking at the photographs of her as a child. It had been a long time since she had seen those pictures – she had fled without any mementos of her past and this reminded her in stark terms. Bette reached over and touched Tina’s hand. The blonde smiled – crazy how some photographs of herself as a child made her emotional. Tina took Bette’s hand and held it. Bette moved so she was closer to Tina
“The pigtails and the braces are a real cute look “
“And the home made dress “Mary said watching the interaction between the two women. She was still getting used to seeing Tina obviously so intimate with a woman but Tina looked at ease with Bette who obviously adored Tina.
“You must have been a real cutie pie “Bette teased
    “Be careful Porter “
    “Just a comment my sweet”
“I knitted her sweaters and made her dresses “
“That’s a real interesting pattern “Bette said stifling a laugh
“It was horrible – I had no taste “Mary admitted
“It’s better than gingham “Tina said suddenly smiling. Bette snorted with laughter and was rewarded by a friendly punch
“Ouch – did you see that Angie – I am being attacked “
Angie smiled and looked back at her grandparents
“Do you know that my mommies sleep together?”
Bette raised an eyebrow at Tina
“We know that they are gay “Mary said
“You didn’t like that mommy was gay “
Tina winched – that was always the risk that the adults were taking. They were all conspiring in a small lie to hide Angie from the reality. Bette had said to Tina’s mom and dad that Angie was not beyond asking awkward questions.
“It was a long time ago and we didn’t really know any other gay people. We were wrong – we have missed your mom a lot and we love her and we are very happy that she is happy with Bette who we both think is lovely “
Angie regarded this answer for a few seconds and smiled. She looked at her grandfather
    “What’s a meteorite granddad?”
