    Old Friends Chapter 26

Alex laughed. You always make fun of my tastes in music, Im surprised you found something you liked.

I played for Tina the theme song you gave me.

Alex chucked at the memory. Yeah, I liked that song when I heard it. The woman in the song has everybody afraid of her, but no one knows how vulnerable she is underneath. She took a deep breath. I hope youll make a better song now.

I intend to. Bette said as she squeezed Tinas hand. Do they have a song about two broads raising a houseful of children and growing old together?

Not that I know of. Dont curse yourself with a houseful until you learn what a handful one can be.

    We can handle it.

Tuition at Harvard isnt cheap for that many children. Alex pointed out.

    You mean, Yale.

And what the ***** is wrong with Pitt? Alex asked. They gave me a degree.

My point exactly. Besides, chips off the old block will go to my alma mater.

Yeah, what about T-birds Alma Mater.

Well, the University of North Carolina isnt a bad school. However, if they choose Yale then I plan to be supportive.

    And poor. Dont forget poor.

We will afford it. Besides, our kids will be so smart, Im sure they will get full scholarships. One to medical school, one to law school. I think one should be a physicist. Oh, dont forget art school. Im sure a couple of our children will go to art school.

    No writers in the family?

Well, Alex, I really would rather they focus on the visual arts.

Ahem Tina interrupted. Since I am the one carrying these children, dont I get a say in all this?

Bette and Alex laughed, as usual they were caught up in their own little competition. Pausing for a second, they both imagined how competitive they would have been if Alex and Catherine had a child. Money would probably have been bet on whose child had the highest GPA.

Of course, T-bird. I think you should insist that one become a writer and attend Pitt. I also think you should insist that the rest of yer younguns go ta Care Oh Lye Na. Alex said in her best satire southern accent.
