Bette’s eyes widened at the news, looking to Kit who seemed to be just as surprised as she was.
“Wha-why didn’t you ever tell me? What did you say to her?”
“Because discussing it with you at the time was not relevant much like it isn’t now”
Bette leaned forward as she pushed her plate aside, placing her arms on the table despite the fact that she knew her father wouldn’t like it.
As well as she believed she knew her father, Melvin’s words continued to surprise Bette. She couldn’t understand how a parent could hold their child’s feelings to such a high disregard.
“How can you say that? It’s just as important now as it was back then. You knew how much she meant to me”
“And those feelings would have influenced your entire life” Melvin’s expression began to morph into the harsh uncaring man Bette had known all too well, “I did what was necessary and I have not regretted it for one second since”
Melvin rose from his seat leaving Bette to look up at him with a confused expression. “Regre- Daddy What are you talking about? What did you say to Tina?”
Melvin looked down at Bette as condescending as ever, “That discussion occurred over seven years ago. Are you implying that I should remember what was said?”
Bette crossed her arms over chest, her stubbornness matching her father’s. “When it comes to the man who forgets nothing, I would hope so”
Kit cleared her throat in warning as she got to her feet to clear the table. Bette tossed an angry glance at her sister’s back before meeting her father’s eyes once more.
There was obviously more to the story than Bette had known and it angered her to have been kept in the dark. She didn’t want to believe that her father could have played a crucial role in breaking her heart so many years ago but it seemed very possible.
Fury burned in Melvin’s eyes as he straightened his crisp button down shirt, “I’m done drudging up the past with you. This conversation is done”
Rage consumed Bette before she even realized if and she slapped her hands on the table so hard it surprised everyone in the room. “The hell it is!”
