Out of Closet (B&T time-travel romance), Ch. 9
She took a deep breath and continued, “But the more time I spend with you the more I realize that it’s not just your goodness or even your loveliness. It’s all of you. I can’t explain it better, Christina, I can only say that I’m drawn to you, I want constantly to look into your eyes, I want to see you all the time. With just the touch of your hand you can send my heartbeat to its fastest speed. I…I am so…God, look at me, I can speak French and German, I can talk for hours about art and I can’t even express my feelings clearly in one sentence.”
“No, you are doing much better than me, actually,” Christina chuckled and sighed, “All I can say is that I’m so confused…”
“Please, Christina, don’t think that, we will figure it out,” Elizabeth interrupted her softly and interlaced her fingers with Christina’s. “That’s what I meant about going with the flow, you know…take one step at a time, follow your heart and see where it will lead you.”
“I can’t do this, Bette,” Christina replied with obvious panic in her voice, “It’s all so surprising, strange and sudden. I can’t…I have to go.”
Christina quickly got off her chair and went back to the studio to gather her things. Elizabeth sat motionless for a minute, trying to understand what just had happened and how it had gone so wrong. One minute they are sharing their feelings and then suddenly she left alone with her thoughts and questions.
Elizabeth saw Christina ready to leave and followed her inside the studio. “Christina, wait,” she asked desperately, putting her hand on Christina’s shoulder. They felt the same jolt of electricity again and both girls froze instantly.
“I can’t do this,” Christina repeated softly, barely above a whisper as she slowly began to tremble.
“You can’t do what, Christina? What are we doing?” Elizabeth asked gently, moving her hand away from her friend’s shoulder so her touch wouldn’t upset Christina even more.
“This,” Christina replied, gesturing at them, “Touching each other, laughing together, feeling confused and happy at the same time. It makes me uncomfortable and unsettled. I have to go.”
