Out of Closet (B&T time-travel romance), Ch. 9
“So, this is it?” Elizabeth asked, suddenly overwhelmed by the feelings of loneliness and sadness. “Will I see you again?” she continued, trying to keep desperation out of her voice. She willed herself to sound calm and rational, but inside she was shaken uncontrollably and the feeling of loss reflected in her eyes.
Christina closed her eyes for a brief moment and then said, “We always be friends, Bette, and there’s an art festival we have to be ready for. I wouldn’t just leave you alone but please, can we minimize the contact? Especially the touching and the way you look at me…”
“What way?” Elizabeth asked, looking straight into Christina’s hazel eyes with an intense gaze of adoration, tenderness and love.
“That’s exactly what I’m talking about, Bette,” Christina exclaimed in frustration, “When you look at me like that it makes it harder for me to be friends and stay so close to you…I have to go. I’ll see you tomorrow, so we can continue working on your paintings.”
With these final words, Christina turned around and left Elizabeth standing alone in the art studio that suddenly became very large and very empty without Christina in it.
Elizabeth sighed audibly and quickly wiped unwelcome tears when she heard happy and cheerful Alicia coming back with some clean brushes, whistling a melody Elizabeth couldn’t recognize. Alicia immediately sensed that something was wrong, seeing Elizabeth with tears on her cheeks and realizing that Christina was absent.
“What happened Bette? Where’s Christina? Did you fight?” Alicia hurried to Elizabeth’s side, taking her hands into hers.
“No, we didn’t fight. It’s just…I told her…we…sorry Alicia, I don’t know how to say it,” Elizabeth gave her a nervous smile and went back to the garden with Alicia following behind her.
“Try me, Bette,” Alicia said sincerely, inviting Elizabeth to share her troubles and concerns. “I’m here for you as your friend now.”
Elizabeth sat down on the chair that just a moment ago was had been occupied by Christina, and touched the spot on the table where Christina’s hand had been resting before things got complicated. She sighed again and looked at Alicia, “I don’t even know where to start.”
