Passing the torch….Thanksgiving Day Challenge
“Seriously, T, I’ve got this. No need to check in with text messages.” Alice balanced the phone between her ear and shoulder as she rifled through the recipe cards she had stolen from her mother. “Dana and I know how hard it is for you to pass the torch so to speak…”
“Yes Bette did mention something about being the ‘it’ couple in the group.” Tina rolled her eyes at Bette as she struggled not to come across as patronizing as she was truly being.
“See you and your elastic pants at 2 o’clock sharp for the meal that will knock your socks off!”
Alice hung up the phone and beckoned for Dana, who came strolling into the kitchen dressed in a chef’s hat and apron that proudly exclaimed that everyone should kiss the cook.
“I’m ready.”
“Look at my little soup chef.” Alice never passed up an opportunity to tease Dana about her misunderstanding of Lara’s chef title.
“I’m here to help, don’t push it or the torch goes back to Bette and Tina.”
“Let’s start with the things we can make today,” Alice looked down her list and frowned. “Everything should really be prepared that day, right?”
“We can peel potatoes to prep them for mashing tomorrow?” Dana suggested playing with the potatoes that Alice had laid out on the kitchen counter.
“Right!” Alice was excited about cooking, but the sight of Dana in her apron was proving to be very distracting. She gently pulled the potatoes out of her hand and began to gently nip at her lips as she spoke. “I think…I need….to first celebrate…what I…am most thankful for.”
Dana laughed as she boosted herself up on the countertop and erased cooking completely from her mind.
– – – – – – –
The alarm rang out at 5 o’clock in the morning; ungodly on any given day, but on a day free from work and all responsibilities it was just unheard of. Alice rolled over and slammed her hand down on the offending noise as she snuggled into Dana’s warmth and started to fall asleep once again.
“You can’t fall back asleep,” Dana muttered as she pushed Alice off of her and turned on the bedside light. “Remember, the torch? The turkey? The candied yams?”

Classic Gumby…clever, fun, witty! Alice is hysterical! Love it Gumby…thanks! For the past 10 years, we go to my sister’s sister-in-law’s…TERRIBLE cook. We don’t have the heart to tell her…so we eat Chinese BEFORE going over to her house. LOL

Pulling off a holiday meal with all the trimmings is hard work. Thank goodness the takeways are open here practically year round! Lenore (and Tina) had the right idea. ;) Thanks for the post!

I like the version of your story with all the girls alive and well and funny as hell. So Tina was very crafty with her Thanksgiving Dinner and Bette knew this but let Alice act of though she was doing them favor by taken over the meal, and then her and Dan end up making out instead of preparing the meal. I wish I had a little more of Angie in the story though.

I thought it was weird that Lenore had her own recipes. And Tina outed as a poseur, LOL. Although I do think that the show’s Tina actually made her own pies, etc.
