That was all it took for Tina to finally call it quits with him. I wanted to be with her and she wanted to be with me, but as long as they were together, it could never happen. Once she made a clean break from him, she took that leap of faith with me. And for the first time, I committed to a woman I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with.
My thoughts were interrupted by an impatient throat-clearing and my vision was again focused on my ex-girlfriend sitting across from me with an expectant look on her face.
”What do you want me to say, Alice?” I asked somewhat defensively.
”I’m just curious, Bette. You’re obviously crazy about her.” She shrugged.
I couldn’t help the goofy grin that was permanently plastered on my face that silently agreed with Alice’s speculation.
”Okay.” I relented. ”She’s got these…” My eyes drifted upward as I cautiously chose my words.
”Amazing breasts?” Alice interrupted.
I grimaced. ”What? No! I mean, she does have those.” I shook my head at my crazy friend. ”But they’re not what I was going to point out.” I took another sip of my coffee as if it would help me mull it over in my head. What do I see in Tina that I didn’t see in Alice? Maybe the easier question is what I didn’t see in Alice that I see in Tina. Of course, I would never actually verbalize that thought.
”Porter, quit stalling!”
There was no way she was going to let it go without an answer. I took a deep breath before attempting to answer truthfully. ”She has these quirks about her.”
”I’m quirky.” Alice insisted.
”I didn’t say she was quirky, I said she has quirks.” I re-affirmed holding my coffee near my lips. ”They’re, I don’t know, endearing.” I couldn’t help but smile again as I mentally listed all the little nuanced things Tina did that just made me crazy about her.
”Like what?” She was never going to give up. I don’t know why I expected her to.
”Liiike…She still has a hint of that Southern drawl.” I knew I was smiling again. ”It’s not super-obvious, but when she says certain things, I can hear it, and it completely unravels me.”

I just love this so simple yet miraculous way one never can say why they fall in love with someone – it’s just it, something magic, impossible to explain to others and even to ourselves…
Now, thinking about the way I would answer to the “why” I love my own one true love, I also see her way to smile, to react, those little gestures, her way to express things… but the mystery of it would remain !
All I can think about, as I always did, is the famous quote of Montaigne about his friendship with La Boetie – but I only know it in french : “Parce que c’était lui, parce que c’était moi”. Period ! :-)
