    The Conversion

We flew to Seattle where she had a car meet us and drive us out to her home. She was met at the house by her housekeeper Karen.  Karen told her that the house was stocked with food and ready for her and her guest.  Bette insisted that I occupy the master suite with her. We had passed the point where sleeping together was optional. It was now expected by both of us.

Bette’s home was a ranch style home on some twenty acres of land. It was on a cliff looking out over the Pacific Ocean and in the rear of the house was a very dense virgin forest. The back yard was a fenced in area where Gretchen had been allowed to exercise and get fresh air. Bette also had a pool and a four-car garage which housed a pick-up truck and a cute sports car.  The house was all on one level with four bedrooms, three- and one-half baths. She had a study/library where she did most of her writing. There was a large kitchen which opened to a dining area and a large living area complete with fireplace and floor to ceiling windows which viewed the front yard and looked out over the Pacific Ocean.  The place was absolutely amazing.

For the week, I was with Bette, we sat and talked and we actually started to do the research on the Bidens and we began to make a schedule as to how we were going to handle the interviews and to who we wanted to interview.

By the end of the week, we made the decision that we should move in together.  I would go home and arrange to sell my condo, arrange for a pet taxi to carry Burt and Ernie to Seattle, Washington and have my own personal items shipped to Bette’s home, dispose of my furniture and then fly to be with Bette. The whole process took about three weeks. When I told Alice, she was upset at first but she seemed to understand and wished me happiness.

On the flight to Seattle to join Bette, I began to review my life. That was when it occurred to me that for the first time, I was doing something bold and risky. I was changing my entire life – my identity, my love interest, my residence, and somewhat my professional direction. All these changes had happened within a 90-day period and I knew that I had never been happier in my life. I had only one person to thank for that.  Bette Porter.

Bette and I were married some three months later on a summer’s day in the front yard overlooking the Pacific Ocean. We had a few of our friends in attendance along with Burt and Ernie. We left for a brief honey moon in Acapulco. We didn’t want to leave Burt and Ernie for very long.  Besides almost every day of our lives together had been a honey moon. And we had trips planned to Wilmington and to Washington DC to do research on our two books we hoped to publish by 2026. We were then planning a lecture and book signing tour together in the northeast. Life was getting busy, but we were enjoying every minute of it.

For the next decade, Bette and I collaborated on more than two dozen books. We then decided to call it quits and do some traveling and an occasional guest lecturer at various colleges and universities. We were occasionally asked to make comments on cable news channels on events which were historical in nature as to their importance to the society and their impact on future generations.

Bette and I enjoyed just over forty years together. I miss her every day. And I thank the randomness of the universe for bringing her to me. It won’t be long Sweetheart, and I will be with you again.

    The End.

      • Janice24,

First of all this story is an alternative time and life for our Bette and Tina. The story is being told by a woman who is older (85 years old) and has experienced a full and joyful life with the woman she loved. They have had more than 40 years together even though they didn’t meet until they were middled aged. I like that they took the time to get to know one another for a few days before charging into a romantic relationship. I like that Bette insist that Tina think about her own life and if she is prepared for the changes which will occur as they start to see each other romantically. Bette wants Tina to make her decision about her life knowing the possible downside. For me, that shows immediately how much Bette respects and cares for Tina right out of starting gates. I also like that Bette insist they talk about things fully as they go. She seeks out Tina’s boundaries and comfort level before they do anything. This is why their relationship is so strong…. they hide nothing from each other.

From the idea to publication, I took 4 days… I enjoyed writing this story because I could see that both Bette and Tina would go from a mundane life to a life of love and devotion within a matter of weeks. And it would result in a lifetime of happiness. Isn’t that what we all want in our lives?

Thank for reading and for commenting on this story… until I saw your comments, I didn’t think anyone had read it…. Thank you for your support and encouragement…
