    The Date

Alice: (handing her a coffee) Seriously, though, what happened to you last night? One minute, you’re in the middle of the dance floor, making out with Mystery Woman, and the next, you’re gone. Shane and I had a bet going on how long it would take for you to ghost her, but even I didn’t think it’d be that quick.

Bette: (leaning back in her chair, smirking) Well, Shane wins, then.

Alice: (sitting on the edge of Bette’s bed) Alright, spill. What happened? Don’t tell me you got cold feet.

Bette: (shrugs) Something just didn’t feel right. I kissed her, and all I could think about was Tina.

Alice: (mocking gasp) Oh my God. The Tina? Coffee shop, mural painting Tina? Are you telling me the great Bette Porter is actually dare I say it smitten?

Bette: (rolling her eyes) I wouldn’t use that word.

Alice: (grinning mischievously) But you’re not denying it.

Bette: (trying to focus on her notebook) Alice…

Alice: No, no, this is too good. I mean, I’ve seen you charm your way through more women than I can count, but this one actually has you all flustered. What’s the deal with her?

Bette: (reluctantly) She’s… different. She’s not like anyone I’ve met before. She’s genuine, creative, and I don’t know she makes me want to be better. And I told her I want to take things slow.

Alice: (raising an eyebrow) Slow? You? Who are you, and what have you done with Bette Porter?

Bette: (smiling faintly) I mean it, Alice. I don’t want to mess this up. She’s not the type of person you play games with.

Alice: (playfully) Oh, but I know your game, Porter. You lure them in with that whole confident, ‘I have my life together’ act, and before they know it, they’re head over heels.

Bette: (pointing her pen at Alice) This isn’t a game, and you know it. Tina’s… different. I actually want to get to know her. The real her.

Alice: (leaning back, mock serious) Well, look at you, catching feelings. I never thought I’d see the day.

    Bette: (dryly) Are you done?

Alice: (grinning) Almost. So, when’s the big date?

    Bette: Friday. Jazz club downtown.

Alice: (nodding approvingly) Classy. I like it. Do I get to help you pick out what to wear, or are you going to wing it and hope for the best?
