    The Date

Bette: Sounds like the opposite of my world. Maybe that’s why I find you so fascinating.

Tina tilts her head, studying Bette with a curious smile.

Tina: You’re full of surprises, aren’t you?

Bette: Stick around, and you might find out just how many.

Their meals arrive, and the conversation flows effortlessly. They share stories, laugh, and exchange lingering glances. By the time dessert comes, the chemistry between them is palpable.

Tina: This was really nice, Bette. Thank you for dinner.

Bette: (smiling softly) It’s not over yet. Ready for some jazz?

    Tina: Lead the way.

Bette stands, offering her hand. Tina takes it, and they head out together, the promise of the night still ahead.

Bette: (grinning) Ready to be swept off your feet by some live jazz?

    Tina: (laughing) I’m ready.

The jazz club is dimly lit and intimate, with small tables clustered around the stage where a quartet is playing a soulful melody. The hum of conversation and clinking glasses creates a cozy, electric atmosphere. Bette and Tina are shown to their table near the stage. The soft lighting highlights their faces, and for a moment, it feels like they’re the only two people in the room.

As they settle in, a waitress brings over drinks. Bette, usually so confident and composed, seems fully focused on Tina. Meanwhile, a few women in the crowd notice her, exchanging whispers and lingering glances.

Tina: (teasing) You seem to have quite the fan club.

Bette: (glancing around briefly, then back at Tina) I didn’t even notice. They’re not the one I’m here with.

Tina smiles, her cheeks flushing slightly. They fall into easy conversation, the music serving as a gentle backdrop.

Midway through the night, as the band plays a lively tune, a bold woman approaches their table. She’s striking, confident, and clearly interested in Bette.

Woman: (to Bette) Bette Porter, right? I thought that was you. Mind if I join you?

Bette barely spares her a glance, her tone polite but firm.

Bette: Actually, I’m on a date.

The woman looks surprised, glancing at Tina and then back at Bette.

    Woman: (smirking) Lucky girl.

She walks away, leaving Tina slightly amused but also curious.

    Tina: Does that happen often?

Bette: (shrugging) More often than I’d like. But tonight, my attentions on you. No distractions.
