    The Date

Bette steps closer, her voice calm and sincere.

Bette: Tina, I’m really glad you told me. I don’t want to push you into anything you’re not ready for.

Tina: (shaking her head) No, it’s not that. I want to be here with you. I just need you to understand where I’m coming from. I’ve had my heart broken before, and I don’t think I can go through that again.

Bette studies her for a moment, then reaches out, gently taking Tina’s hand.

Bette: I get it. And I promise you, Tina, I’m not here to break your heart. I know my reputation, but with you… it’s different. You’re different. And I won’t take that for granted.

Tina searches Bette’s eyes, finding nothing but honesty. A soft smile tugs at her lips, the tension between them easing.

With an unspoken understanding, they step into the restaurant, where the warm glow of string lights and flickering candles sets an intimate tone.

Bette offers her arm, and without hesitation, Tina takes it. Their eyes meet, a quiet warmth passing between them, before they walk inside together.

At a small table by the window, they settle in as the low murmur of conversation and the smooth notes of music weave through the air. A waiter pours their wine, the rich aroma filling the space as they glance over their menus, stealing glances at each other between the pages.

Tina: (playfully) Alright, lawyer. What’s your argument for tonight’s dinner choice?

Bette: (grinning) Well, I’d say the filet mignon is a strong case, but the salmon has an excellent alibi.

    Tina laughs, shaking her head.

Tina: Wow. Do you use that charm on everyone?

Bette: (smirking) Only when it counts.

They settle into conversation, the initial nerves melting away as they talk. The topic drifts to childhood memories.

Tina: So, Philly, huh? What was that like growing up?

Bette: Busy. Competitive. My dad’s a big business man, and very strict about my career so you can imagine the pressure. But it made me… focused, I guess. And you? North Carolina sounds a lot calmer.

Tina: (smiling) It was. Lots of small-town charm. I grew up surrounded by nature, painting under trees, that kind of thing. My parents were teachers strict, but supportive.
