    The Island – Chapter 18

“I give you my share of the expenses each month. Don’t blame me for your long hours. And you sure as hell have no reason to take your grief out on me. What do you want, Tina? Just tell me what the hell I can do to help you.” Bette is just as frustrated and the tone in her voice shows it.

“I have to go.” Tina walks out angrily.

“Yeah. Happy anniversary Princess.” Bette whispers to a cold and empty room before stuffing her face into Tina’s pillow.

Tina stomps downstairs. She shakes her head in anger. The daily stresses of her job have her fuming but what makes her really angry is that Bette just doesn’t understand. This is who she is. This is what she does best. She’s a top-grossing producer making top-grossing films. She’s worked too hard to get where she is and is not about to slow down.

More importantly, she’s working her ass off for both of them. But is she really, doubt invades every inch of her being. She suddenly feels the burden of her career and her heart sinks. Why can’t she slow down? Why does she have to do everything herself? Why does she always push everybody away? She grumbles. She hates this unyielding, ultra-controlling side of herself. Yet, her passion for her work has made her incredibly successful and she truly loves her career. Or she did, when she was working on independent films with real stories and visionary filmmakers who wanted to make more than a fast buck. The corporate aspect of the business is the real issue with her frustration with work. She must answer to them. She still tries desperately to put her own unique stamp on her films. It’s what she fights for and it’s what keeps her going. She looks at her message when her phone vibrates in her hand. She grumbles again as she realizes her day is going to be shitty yet again.

She grabs her purse and briefcase and opens the door with force. She steps through, slamming the door behind her. Her eyes adjust quickly to the early hour light but not quick enough as she bumps into a striking, young blond. The sight of the beautiful surfer girl before her is both surprising and alarming. She’s wearing ragged jeans and a pull over sweatshirt. Her hair is long and wavy and gorgeous even in the soft light of the waking sun.
