The Roommates – Fast Forward to 2019: Chapter 12

The house felt quiet and lonely when she arrived. She called for Dana, but her favorite tennis player never appeared. Bette had fallen asleep on the couch, still in her clothes when Tina called. Her voice was soft and sweet when she answered.

    “Hi Tina.”

“Hi Babe. Turn the camera toward you. I want to see your face.” Tina had had the worst day. A brutal cold front had swept into New York, making it hard to shoot the scenes that had been scheduled for that day. The actors were bitchy, the crew was bitchy, and Tina had been bitchy. She had changed the schedule for the next day, giving everyone a little more time to recover in the morning. Thinking of Bette had gotten her through the hardest bits.

“No, I don’t want you to see me.”

    “Why?”

    “I feel asleep. I don’t look good.”

Tina laughed softly. “I don’t care. I need to see your smile.”

Bette’s eyes opened wider and she felt warmth all through her body. “You need to see my smile?”

“I do. It always makes me feel better.”

Bette acquiesced and stared into the camera on her phone. Tina’s hair was down, her makeup still on. She was wearing her pajamas. “Hi Baby,” said Bette.

    “Thank you,” Tina replied.

Bette looked around the background of Tina’s image. “Where are you?”

“I’m home. At the apartment. I’m in the kitchen making a drink.”

“What are you drinking?” asked Bette.

Tina showed her the bottle of Tito’s and the cranberry juice.

“Do you drink a lot?” asked Bette.

Tina shook her head. “No. Not a lot. What’s your drink?”

Tina watched as Bette tilted her head to the side, thinking. “It used to be single malt scotch, neat.”

The blonde chuckled. “Shit. That’s like drinking diesel fuel to me. I’ve never really liked the taste of hard liquor.”

Bette shrugged. “It’s more bang for your buck. A nice scotch will mellow you out. Doesn’t take a lot to get you buzzed and feeling good.”

Tina held up her glass. “As you can see, I prefer my drinks fruity. I especially love the ones that don’t taste like alcohol.”

    Bette winked at her. “Amateur.”

“So what’s your drink now? What do you like?” asked Tina.

Bette looked confused. “What do you mean?”

“You said scotch used to be your drink. What do you drink now?”

    “Oh. I don’t drink, T.”

    Tina looked surprised. “You don’t?”

    “No. I don’t.”

    “I’m sorry. I didn’t realize.”

Bette sucked her teeth, staring into the hazel eyes. “Tina, Tina, Tina. What have I told you about apologizing for things that need no apology.”

    Tina smiled. “Yes, I remember.”

Bette smiled at her. “Good. I miss you, Tina.”

    “I miss you, too.”

“So, tonight is a vodka cran. I’ll listen if you want to tell me about it.”

Tina looked at her curiously. “About what?”

The brunette nodded. “You had a bad day,” she said. It was more of a recap than a suggestion or a question.

Tina grabbed her drink and walked back to her bedroom. “It was really shitty. How did you know?”

    “It’s in your eyes.”

Tina paused, somewhat taken aback at her lover’s observation. She answered quietly after a moment. “It was a hard day. I froze my ass off. And everyone was really moody.”

Bette gazed at her. There was something about Bette’s eyes that put Tina at ease. She sat down on her bed and sighed. “Tell me about it, T.”

Tina sipped her drink and said, “I don’t want to bore you.”

    “You never bore me, Tina.”

“Well, it’s early yet. Wait until I start telling you the same stories on repeat.”

Bette laughed. “I’ll believe it when I hear it. I hope we spend lots of time together.”

    “Me too.”

And then Tina told Bette about her shitty day. And Bette made her feel better. Just by being there.

    1. Sounds to me like Sidney needs some help – possibly some professional mental health? Early in the story, I got the impression that Sidney had entice Bette into indulging in drugs and alcohol. Could this be Sidney’s problem? She’s indulging so much in drugs and alcohol that she cannot perform to meet her obligations to get her artwork ready for the show? She obviously feels the pressure when she is in the gallery of the time frame left to get her part of the show completed. She is also feeling the pressure of her relationship with Bette continuing on a decline. She should also notice that Bette’s appearance getting more healthy as she puts distance of time between her and her abuse of alcohol and drugs. At some point, she is going to be curious as to what has changed for Bette to bring about these changes. Alice has certainly starting to notice, but she believes that it must be the influence of Tina. Yet Bette barely knowns Tina.

Tina is playing games…she has no courage. She of course has no idea what it is she wants except to have Bette in her life. She has a lot of soul searching to do. She really does need to decide what she wants in her life. She needs to have a heart to heart talk with Henry and let him go. She is doing him a severe disservice by pretending to care and about his feelings when she truly does not. Whether Bette is her future or not, she should not stay with Henry giving him some kind of false impression that she cares about him and lying to him to keep from confronting the truth. In almost every breakup, one of the parties walks away with hurt feelings. Its best to rip the bandaid off quickly and get on with life.

Alice is being a really good friend by encouraging Bette to move forward with her life. The best thing Bette can do is to support Sidney where she can, but put her in a position and encourage her to move on as well. What ever Sidney’s demons are, remaining with Bette is not the answer.

Good story…. still worried about this Tina….. I like Bette a lot.

      Happy Holidays…

    2. Thank you for another chapter this soon.

I like Alice in your story. Another wise advice for Bette. She needs to end it with Sidney.
Were the divorce papers already delivered to her soon-ex-wife? But it’s great that she acknowledges that finding Tina is not all she has to do to shape the life of “Bette 2019”.

Difficult situation for Tina. It takes a lot of courage to leave behind so many thing that made her feel safe and probably in control of her life. On top of that no friends to talk to, to encourage her and to support her. I hope she soon finds the strenght to open up to Bette and tell her about Henry and her family.

That said, I like the pace of your story. It’s not all instant love, peace and harmony, T + B have to work for it.

I’m curious to see what you have in store for T + B.

    3. Love this story, I remember when it started. I like the pace of your story as well and the interesting twist of the time travel. Anything that brings T and B together in the end. Thanks!
