The Roommates – Fast Forward to 2019: Chapter 51
“Thank you for having me. I know how our community feels about the church. I’m not here as a Jesus representative tonight. I’m here as a proud gay man and member of our Toronto queer community.”
The audience applauded and Tina squeezed Bette’s hand. She loved every minute of this night. It was really their first date since their initial meeting at The Planet. They had walked together across burning sand and broken glass, yet hadn’t had a dinner out together. She loved getting dressed up and looking good for her girlfriend. And Bette had a magnetic appeal that Tina could hardly tear herself away from.
They weren’t hiding. They were happy and out and proud and safe in a room full of kinfolk strangers.
She leaned into Bette’s ear and whispered. “This is wonderful. I love you, Bette.”
Bette smiled and kissed her rosy, painted lips. Her eyes were misty. “I love you, too.”
The speaker continued.
“We have come a long way. For so long, our people have fought for the right to exist. To live. To work. To raise our families. To love. To age. And even to die with dignity. As we enter the dawn of a new decade, I’d like us to reflect on the path ahead. While we can never take our focus off of ensuring civil rights and liberties for the LGBTQIA community, we must also mature in our development and support of one another.
“As a minister, I find that I spend as much time counseling members of the community who are divorcing, as much as I spend with those planning to marry. For so long, we’ve been focused on surviving that we haven’t taken the time to exercise the skills needed to thrive. To move beyond our basic needs and build sustainable, healthy bonds that strengthen us, our friends, and our families.
“I encourage each of you to challenge yourselves and those you love to build community. To represent the true values of love and inclusion that we’ve fought for centuries to attain….”
Bette squeezed Tina’s hand and then wrapped her arm around her girlfriend’s shoulders. The speech was a reflection of their journey to this point. Everything had been about surviving; simply moving from one day’s catastrophe to the next. She wanted to build a future with the woman at her side; a strong sustainable happy ever after that could withstand the harshest of storms.

Thanks for this beautiful uninterrupted Christmas celebrations. I imagine they both looked stunning at the Christmas dinner dance bonding foreplay party.
Love their bonding, their introspective thoughts on their little journey towards each other, on their deep and unconditional feelings and their future. Peacefully enjoying the little bubble they live in on their holidays.
And this breathtaking, intense, love scene? It is so intimate and full of love vibes, I felt a little like crying like Bette, too.
Looking forward to more.
