    The Set Up (26)

Angelica bit her lower lip as she ran up to the house – impatient and excited. She waited on the porch for her mother, who brought her purse high up onto her shoulder. Tina sighed quite heavily.

“Angie, are you sure you didn’t leave anything in there? I thought you had leftovers?”

    “No, Mom! Come on.”

“I’m coming,” Tina chuckled, finally stepping up the steps with her keys just as flustering as they always were. Why did she have so many keys? “Where is your key, hunny?”

“I left it in my room,” Angelica lied, smiling as she stepped aside to make way for her oblivious mother. She sucked in a deep breath as her mother unlocked the door. “Love you Mom!” She hadn’t meant it to be so loud.

Tina let out a slanted smile, tilting her head along with it. “I love you too, hunny.”

Angelica clapped her hands. “Okay. Just … open the door.” She was quick on her feet. “Come on, Mom. I have to go to the bathroom!”

Tina chuckled once more, and pushed the door open, half-stumbling inside the dimly lit living area – quickly looking out to the romantic atmosphere with a stint of confusion. What … is going on? Romantic setting? Am I missing something? Anniversary? No … what the hell … And then she saw Bette move in from the kitchen, holding nothing in her hands. Not even the usual glass of water that seemed commonplace in her grasp. Bette simply had her hands folded together, twisting them even.

    “T.”

“What’s … going on?” Tina asked as calmly as she could, glancing back to see Angelica grinning up at her. And when she realized the mischievous look, Tina looked back to Bette. “What are you two up to?”

Bette stood rather nervously, with her arms at her sides, her palms sweaty and her smile turning up when she saw Tina’s smile. She waited for the strength to speak.

“And why is it so dark in here?” Tina chuckled, hearing that Angelica had closed the door behind them. And slowly, her little girl pushed her closer, the hands leaving her back as she stood before Bette. She spoke a little softer, seeing something special in Bette’s eyes. A glow. Her second question was more intimate. “What’s going on?”
