    The Set Up (27)

“No,” Bette insisted, “No no no.” She stepped over to the mirror, looking in it to keep her make up pristine. It wouldn’t be long until she would walk down the aisle – the outdoors aisle on her side – Tina coming in from the other. She took a deep breath in and out, remembering the wedding rehearsal. Remembering Tina’s beaming smile as they stood together, excited and content. “No, I don’t wanna see her. Not before … I don’t wanna see her yet. I’ll be fine.”

Angelica cracked open the door, smiling. “I was listening for a minute …” she confessed, earning Bette’s look of disbelief as she slipped into the room to close the door behind her. “Sorry. I didn’t wanna interrupt.”

“So you listened?” Bette asked, frustrated with herself, and nervous for everything else. Her shoulders dropped. “Angelica … it’s not what you think. I’m just … I’ll be fine once I look into your mother’s eyes when I finally see her. I just … need to see her. That’s all.”

Angelica was out and running down the hall of the ideal hotel before Bette could stop her – leaning out of the room to shout after her.

    “Angelica!”

Bette closed the door and locked it, leaning against it.

“What a royal mess I’m making of all this.”

“You want me to go grab her?” Shane laughed, taking out a cigarette, “Not that I could catch her, probably.”

“I thought Carmen was on you about that shit,” Bette insisted, grabbing it from her friend and throwing it into the garbage bin without a thought.

    “Hey hey! What was that?”

“I’m bridezilla,” Bette grumbled as she hurried into the bathroom for the better lighting. Looking at herself again, steadying her breathing. She could hear Shane’s quiet laughter, and then a small bounce on the bed, but nothing could distract Bette from the image she saw when she closed her eyes. Tina. She just hung her head and breathed at the thought. The woman who would soon be her wife.

In Tina’s room, there was more commotion. Victoria was in there with Tina, listening to music together, drinking water. Alice had come to help, too, and she was singing into her glass while she dried the bottom of a few curls. Funny how gravity affected water just like anything else – even when it was accidentally spilled. Thankfully it had only caught Tina’s hair, and it was also thankful that Tina couldn’t have cared less. She was in complete bliss. She was even laughing as Alice set down the water and playfully fluffed her hair.

    1. So freaking cute. That’s all I’m going to say. Also, Sara Bareilles is perfect for this!! I love her songs just as I love your stories, thanks so much for this so-sweet-I-now-need-to-go-to-a-dentist chapter!! :)

    2. I think that I loved the entire story b/c of the lack of hyperbole. Their story seemed so authentic and realistic. Their foibles and quirks were not glossed over but the tenderness and lust of their love was captivating and genuine. One of your very best efforts that was very appealing. Please try to continue their journey w/Angie.

    3. That was so amazing, but I was wondering the time frame from the proposal to te wedding, I dont’t recall reading that, because at the wedding Shane is with Carmen. I love Tina and Bette’s vows, but I am so in love with Angelica’s. Just Awesome.
