The Taste of Ink (working title)

As she was hitting the keys on her phone a blonde girl walked up to Dana shyly. “UmExcuse me, I don’t mean to intrude or anything, but my friends want to know if your that tennis player?” The girl motioned over her shoulders to group of three other girls who were whispering and giggling at each other and their friend who had approached Dana. “UhDana Fairbanks?”

“Uh, Yeah I am.” Dana said as Shane put her phone away and watched the scene unfold before her. Dana herself suddenly wished that she hadn’t shooed Tonya away from her. It wasn’t until this moment that she realized just how unequipped she was to deal with strangers coming up and talking to her.

“Well, ah, we wanted to know if wecould buy you a drink.” The girl finished only slightly less nervous than Dana.

Dana faltered for a moment wishing that she could say yes to the cute girl in front of her, but she just couldn’t. “Umthat’s really sweet of you, but I have someone waiting.” Dana smiled and Shane shook her head.

“Alright thanks anyway.” The girl went to walk away and then turned back toward Dana. “Hey, um do you think that we could get a picture?”

Dana grinned. “Sure.” Dana turned back around and walked over to where she had just been. Dana smiled shyly as the girl handed her camera over to one of her friends and stood next to Dana. The girl snapped the picture and then mumbled a thank you before rejoining her friends and waling back toward the crowded bar. Dana smiled after her and then walked back toward Shane. “What?” she asked when Shane shook her head.

“Nothing, man.” She replied in her flat voice.

“Come on. What?” Dana asked again.

“Those girls were all over you, man. You should have went for it. That’s all.” Shane shrugged at her friend.

Dana shook her head. “Just not into it.” Dana said with her own shrug. “I don’t want to sleep around, and rack up notches on the bedpost. I miss Lara. I mean I miss what she was. I liked the way that she saw me. I liked hanging out with her and waking up next to her and falling asleep with her. I miss finding out new stuff about her, you know all that sweet and romantic junk.” Dana smiled sadly and then looked up at Shane. “Don’t you ever want that, Shane? Don’t you ever want someone to make you feel like you’re the most important thing?”
