The Thawing of the Ice – Chapter One
Chapter One
A bitter exhale slipped over Bette’s lips as she rolled her eyes and took a sip of her scotch. She was sitting beside the pool, her feet dangling in the tepid, chlorinated water. The blanket of darkness surrounding her was comforting. Something about the quiet and the still of the night gave her a sense of peace and calm. Faint light from the patio fell across the pool and she lightly kicked the water before setting her drink down on the concrete.
She shook her head, trying to erase a series of unsavory images from her mind. No matter how many times she shook her head, rolled her eyes, or sipped her scotch, the recent memories she’d made would not fade.
Big brown eyes watered and lips, baring a hint of long ago faded lipstick, trembled. A sob threatened to escape her lungs but she refused to let it out.
"No more sobbing," she whispered.
A lone tear had slid silently from her left eye and with a cleansing wipe of that solitary drop of moisture, Bette whispered, "No more tears."
She reached for her glass and finding it empty, she pulled her long legs out of the water and headed into the kitchen for her second scotch of the evening.
Twisting the top off the bottle, the tall, tired woman caught a glimpse of herself in the shiny glass of the microwave. She didn’t like what she saw.
That reflection bore the lost and tired shadow of the woman Bette knew she used to be. The shadow was wounded and defeated and though she was mired in a sea of disappointments, Bette knew that she had too much going for her to look as lost as she looked in the shiny glass of the microwave. She locked eyes with the tired shadow and exhaled slowly before she softly whispered, "Another round, Bette? Do you want to do this again?"
She well understood that she was once again starting an all-too-familiar cycle. The pattern of dysfunctional behavior that began whenever her life was thrown wantonly off path.
Bette falls apart.
Bette drinks.

Glad to see you back, MTS! :) I thought you’d never post again so this is a nice surprise. I have a soft spot for your “Roommates” series and I still wish you’d continue and finish it someday. But thank you for writing and posting again. Cheers to your return! =)

MTS is Back! And with a wonderful story! I liked how this story ended on a note of hope (and had Tina and Henry behaving with decency and kindness, even though they were justifiably angry), despite being set in the grimness that was Season 3. I have waited so,so very long for a continuation of The Roommates. Please do give us some of that tale as well.
Wonderful writing. I can feel Bette’s pain and her return to sanity. Sad but hopeful.
Welcome back!!! I am always ready for a new adventure with her new story. This serie was very very difficult for me to watch. And to be honest, I did not watch it all. To sad and unfair on Bette. After all she is Angie’s mother as well as Tina.GOD will keep Angie safe Bette and he will bring you her back eventually.
Excellent story. I look forward to more. I’m not familiar with your other story or stories, but I would like to read Roommates too please.
So happy to see you back and with a new story to boot! I’m partial to “Roommates”, but I like this one as well. Thanks for posting!
WELCOME BACK!!!! What a nice surprise to see your name again! And what a heart wrenching beginning. You wrote this first chapter perfectly….and I do mean perfectly! Thank you for coming back!
OMG, OMG, OMG….I love that you’re back. I wish more of your originators would write again. Those 4 pages just slammed me right back to that moment, it’s been so long since the series has been on and I don’t watch the DVD’s yet. I’m so excited to know your writing again, thanks!!!!
It’s wonderful to have you back and with a very turthful and painful chapter in their lives. We know Tina can be vindictive when she wants but hopefully you will turn her around little by little. So glad Bette put that bottle down. Can hardly wait for the next chapter. Thanks for sharing with us.
