The Thawing of the Ice – Chapter One

But she didn’t feel that the sum of her indiscretions should have resulted in the toxic and combustible relationship she now shared with Tina.

Bette chewed at her lip, but she didn’t say anything more to Tina. Quietly, she strode away and back to the front door, passing Henry on her way. She thanked him again and he gave her a sad glance. His shoulders were drooped, bearing the heavy weight of the situation he’d now found himself in.

All of that had transpired six hours and twelve minutes ago.

They had all been in Whistler, Canada for Shane’s wedding to the beautiful and feisty Carmen de La Pica Morales when Bette’s world had begun to spiral out of control. Despite her expectations, Tina had brought Henry along to Whistler for the festivities. It seemed like an intrusion. Henry the lesbian stealing man smiling among a framily (a wondrous meld of a chosen friends sharing a bond that rivaled that of their biological families) of WeHo based lesbians.

His presence alone had been a blow to Bette’s ego. It wasn’t enough that Tina had frozen her out of their relationship and consorted with Henry behind her back. Tina had chosen to flaunt her new relationship in front of her face, forcing his presence upon those Bette held nearest and dearest to her heart.

She’d felt threatened. Worried he would usurp her presence in Angelica’s life.

And facing the threat of the rigid heterosexual paradigm she’d risked her reputation to escape, Bette had panicked. She grabbed up Angelica and hit the road; leaving Tina frightened and angry and with a heart hardened against Bette.

Bette had spent four days on the run, thinking through her options and driving back down to Los Angeles.

She’d arrived home tired and hopeless and though Angie seemed no worse for the wear, Bette was ashamed at the irresponsibility of her actions. Anything could have happened to them along their journey and even though she didn’t agree with Tina’s recent actions, she knew it was unfair to keep her away from their child. Bette knew her fears had guided her rash response and she didn’t want to set this type of fear-based, knee-jerk reaction to circumstance for Angelica.

Bette Porter was better than that. She would fight for Angelica. But she would fight fairly. As Bette had pulled to the curb in front of Tina’s new residence, she’d convinced herself that would win. Then, she’d opened the door to her car at precisely 6 o’clock pm.

And now, at six hours and twelve minutes after the unfortunate events of the day, Bette slowly exhaled and once again shook her head to erase the memories. She left her glass on the counter, turned out the lights and headed for her room.

The night had been cool, but not cold. The air almost refreshing and cleansing in its crispness. Wanting to preserve this feeling of crispness, she slipped into a pair of smooth and silky white satin pajamas. After brushing her teeth and washing her face, she sat at the edge of her empty king-sized bed and exhaled, pale light surrounding her.

Bette Porter did something she hadn’t done since almost losing Tina after Angie’s delivery.

She bowed her head, closed her eyes, and she prayed.

"God please keep her safe. Please keep her safe. I know I’ve been wrong, but just please don’t let anything happen to her," she whispered to the pale light, her voice nearly cracking as she spoke.

Bette Porter wasn’t sure that she believed in God. She also wasn’t sure that if He did exist, that he would listen to her. But being as though she had no other way of protecting her child, she did the only thing she could do.

And then, she turned out the lights and slid into bed, surprised that sleep found her amid a flurry of anxious thoughts.

    6. MTS is Back! And with a wonderful story! I liked how this story ended on a note of hope (and had Tina and Henry behaving with decency and kindness, even though they were justifiably angry), despite being set in the grimness that was Season 3. I have waited so,so very long for a continuation of The Roommates. Please do give us some of that tale as well.

    7. Welcome back!!! I am always ready for a new adventure with her new story. This serie was very very difficult for me to watch. And to be honest, I did not watch it all. To sad and unfair on Bette. After all she is Angie’s mother as well as Tina.GOD will keep Angie safe Bette and he will bring you her back eventually.

    10. It’s wonderful to have you back and with a very turthful and painful chapter in their lives. We know Tina can be vindictive when she wants but hopefully you will turn her around little by little. So glad Bette put that bottle down. Can hardly wait for the next chapter.
