The Trouble With Love Chapter Thirty Four

Do you want to try again? asked Bette, trying to get away from the subject of her father.

Nice try Bette, but were not finished talking about Melvin. Do you really think that he set conditions in his love for you?

I always felt the pressure to be the good daughter, the one that fulfilled all of his ambitions. I cant even remember a time when Kit and him were on good terms. She would always push the limits of what she though that he could tolerate and eventually their whole relationship broke down, so I thought that I had to make up for that and when you add in the issue of the fact that he left her mother for mine, well, thats complicated.

So you did everything he wanted.

    Except one thing.

Yeah, and who would have thought that I would end up paying for that.

He knows what you mean to me, that we live together, that Im in love with you.

Bette, he calls me Ms. Kennard.

Bette couldnt find a response that was fitting for that so just stayed quiet, still trying to figure out how a conversation that was supposed to be about discovering Tinas feeling over trying to have a baby turned into one about Bettes relationship with her father. Bette also knew that Tina wasnt going to let her off the hook, the time for that had passed in their relationship, so she had to think of a answer that gave Tina what she wanted.

As Tina sat she watched the myriad of thoughts pass though Bettes mind, waiting for her to form some kind of conclusion. Tina knew that Bette hated to have her bond with her father questioned but Tina needed to know how it was going to impact on their future. Just as she thought she should put Bette out of her misery by saying something Bette began to speak.

I could always try to make up for all of Melvins mistake. she said brightly.

I dont think all of what Melvin did was a mistake.

    No?

Well, regardless of everything, he does have the most amazing daughter. replied Tina, leaning over to give Bette a soft kiss.

Youre being nice to me now. smiled Bette, feeling some of her frustration drain away.
