#TLW10 A Beautiful Gift
A Beautiful Gift Part 1
Shane: I think kids are such a beautiful gift because … I don’t know I mean I look at that little one and I see the love that you have for her and the love you actually have for each other despite the things you’re going through. I don’t know I guess it just seems like sometimes love just doesn’t last the way you hope it will but if you can get through that pain it lasts in more ways that are more precious … maybe .. possibly.

Bette Porter sat across from Joyce Wischnia, a renowned gay civil rights lawyer that specialized in civil and family matters. Joyce was one of the first to support same-sex adoptions. She also did estate planning, child custody, domestic partnership arrangements, separation and divorce.
Bette knew Joyce by reputation but she’d also been on the opposing side of the table when Joyce represented Bette’s ex-wife Tina Kennard in her suit for divorce the year prior. Joyce would have taken Bette to the cleaners had Tina not had a change of heart. They reconciled but unfortunately for both of them the trust that was broken with Bette’s infidelity could not be rebuilt nor could they sustain the marriage.
Tina’s insecurities led her to leave Bette for a second time and she’d already found someone new. However divorce wasn’t on the agenda today. Bette had a more pressing reason to be in Joyce’s office that afternoon.
“I know that you are probably surprised that I would come to you.”
“No. I’m not at all. If I were in your position I’d come to me too.”
“And what position is that?”
“A non-birth mother in a lesbian relationship that is breaking up.”
“How did you know that Tina and I are breaking up?”
“I’m a lesbian in Los Angeles.”
“Did you also know that she has a boyfriend?”
“Of course she does. Well the good news is that the law is on your side. Did you know that?”
“No.”
“California law actually recognizes you as … what’s the kid’s name?”
“Angelica.”
“Angelica … you’re Angelica intended parent from conception. You’ve actively co-parented her and you and Tina filed the adoption petition at the time of her birth. California court would almost certainly grant the adoption and award you 50/50 joint custody.”

This was really a wonderful read! I couldn’t stop and kept nodding my head as Bette narrated the story, totally agreeing with her on so many points. Thank you for going so deep…wow…really great story!

This story is begging for more chapters. I like how you dissect and construct Bette’s reasons for the kidnapping. The reasons are very developed and reasonable. Nicely done!

Interesante historia,

BAT, very interesting plots twists and perspectives. I’m getting to this kidnap point in what I’m working on, too. God, I think I have a bit of freedom – maybe 28 hours to run Bette off road somewhere- interesting ideas you have put into your stories, my friend. I know these take hours and hours to write – thanks for your time and sharing them with us. BLACKBIRD

Hey Bat, I love your stories as they always contain such quality to the way you place your words down so eloquently. The stories lately have been so good and I love spending time diving into them. I agree as this story could do with a few more chapters.
