    TOMORROW

Tina sat up and looked over at the clock. She put her hands over her face and tried to control herself for Bette’s sake. They were both sitting up now looking at one another and without another word they walked toward the bathroom to shower. They made love under the spray of the water one more time before washing each other’s body. They were silent the entire time as they dressed and drank a cup of coffee. Tina’s bag was packed and she was ready to leave.

They stood face to face ready for the moment they had dreaded all along. Tina knelt by her bag and pulled out a velvet bag. She emptied the contents into her hand to reveal a white gold heart on a chain. “It’s not a substitute for my real heart. You’ll always have real thing. It’s just… It will never, ever belong to anyone else.”

She brought Bette’s hand to her chest and then raised it, kissing the palm. She put the chain around Bette’s neck and kissed the heart.

Bette reached behind Tina to the drawer and pulled out a small black box.  She knelt down before Tina and opened it. It was sapphire in a platinum setting. The tears flowed easily out of Tina’s eyes.

“In my heart, I marry you Tina Kennard, and I give you my love and devotion forever.” Tina was sobbing as Bette placed the ring on her right hand. “It’s the color of our ocean view.”

They were both crying now and in such a tight embrace, they could barely breathe. They let go walking slowly toward the door and it took a few minutes for them to be able to get past it.

    “I love you Tina.”

“I love you too, baby.” Tina walked out the door and headed toward her car trying to keep herself from running back.

Bette whispered at her. “Come back baby, turn around and come back.” Tina started running but not in her direction. She watched her drive away…forever.

Bette was on her third scotch as she looked at her watch. It had been almost twelve hours since she had left. The ceremony would be over and Tina would officially belong to Eric. She looked out at the ocean and poured herself another drink to cry into. She replayed the events of the last day in her mind. She closed her eyes and kissed every freckle again in her mind. The tears escaped as she tightened them. She opened them and looked up at the stars. Her vision was blurred with tears as she brought her gaze back to beach.

She wiped her eyes and put her drink down thinking she had had too much. The figure on the beach held a pair of sandals and her hair whipped around her face in the breeze. She was running toward the beach house…wearing a white gown. Bette smacked her own face to snap herself out of it. She was surely hallucinating. She looked again and focused with all her might. She hurdled the deck and landed on the sand ten feet down. Dusting herself off she looked again. The woman was running faster and as Bette got a few feet closer she could see it was Tina.

They ran toward one another crashing with a force so great they fell onto the sand with a thump.

“Tina! Is it you? Am I seeing things?”

“It’s me.” She kissed her pushing her down onto the sand.

“What…I don’t understand…you said you made up your mind.”

“I couldn’t do it. I told them. I told everyone I was in love with you. They think I’m fucking nuts but I don’t care.”

    “You didn’t get married?”

“I couldn’t…I was already married once today…to you.”

Tina showed Bette the ring she had given her now on her left ring finger. Bette brought it to her mouth and kissed it.

    “I love you Bette.”

    “I love you too, baby.”

They kissed as the tide got closer, nipping at their heels. Tomorrow could take it’s time now, they had forever.
