    TOMORROW

“Uh, come in. Are you hungry? I made lunch.”

“Yeah, let’s eat.” Neither had any appetite in the last few weeks and both had lost weight but they never refused an opportunity to share a meal together.

Tina looked at her as she set everything out. Would it really be the last time she would ever see her? They had discussed the possibility of them remaining friends after Tina got married but Bette made it clear that she would not be able to do it. Tina continued to try and convince her at every opportunity.

“Uh, maybe in a few weeks we can go on that ski trip we were talking about. You know maybe before the holidays.” Tina went to open the bottle of wine she had brought with her.

Bette stopped what she was doing and stared into the refrigerator trying her best not to get angry.

“T…I told you how I felt about that. I can’t, you know I can’t do that.”

Tina could feel the emotion start to build in her. “Bette, we could do it. We could still be in one another’s lives. You’re my best friend. Please, couldn’t we try?”

Bette turned to face her. “Tina, I can’t. I love you. I’m in love with you. What is that you want me to do? Have lunch from time to time, or go shopping, or maybe see a movie every now and again and then watch you go home to him. I can’t stand it now and you’re not even married or living with him! It isn’t fair to ask me to watch you be with someone else.”

Tina lowered her head. “ I know I’m being selfish but…I don’t want to lose you.”

    “Then don’t marry him.”

Tina got up and walked toward the windows. “It’s not that simple Bette. They have expectation of me. What am I supposed to do? Should I tell my right-wing, conservative parents that I’m in love with a woman and I can’t marry their idea of my perfect mate? And what should I say to Eric? He has been nothing but patient with me. I haven’t had sex with him in over a year, and he’s still with me! He doesn’t deserve to be hurt.”

    6. Ok, truth: I read the 1st page and started the 2nd, but then immediately went to the last page, because there was no way my heart could take their last night together if Tina married Eric! And no, reading the end didn’t spoil the story because what was in between was lovely, and hot, and sweet! Thanks for sharing!

    8. Wow, what an amazingly beautiful story. “she had the cutest freckles all over like stars waiting to be named.” My favorite line from the story. This was beautifully written. While I was reading, I was hoping that Tina would show up on Bette’s doorstep in her wedding dress. Simply beautiful :)
