Uncharted Territory
‘I believe I read about that in the papers.’ Helena looks up and catches Bette’s smirk opposite of her. ‘Yes Bette, before you say anything I do read the paper sometimes.’
‘I didn’t say a word. But I feel enlightened now that you shared this with me.’ She counters with the weird playfully irony that they seem to share. ‘Tina let me read the script, it’s … I was blown away.’
‘Is it true that Kate Winslet signed up?’
‘Don’t believe everything you hear. It’s unbelievable how fast those rumors spread.’ I tell Winny. ‘Anyway, I checked with the costume department for you, they will contact you this week they think they have exactly what you need.’ At the hospital where she works they regularly organize events to cheer up the sick children and we talked about it so I suggested to check if Netflix was willing to donate costumes.
‘That’s great thanks so much. Let’s toast to your new job and to Renee.’ Winny lifts her glass and we all follow. In the corner the swing door opens and the sounds of sizzling meat and clattering dishes coming from the kitchen downs down the clinging of our glasses.
Our conversation flows into another direction, together with the fine wine and the haute cuisine. There’s magic to it and there’s a comfort that only exists between long term friends. Placing the butter dish closer to me and handing me the butter knife Bette resumes her conversation with Winny in a more passionate tone. ‘I hear all that you’re saying, I really do, but personally I will never understand the reason for a mediator. I mean, I can only assume you married out of love once and you chose to have a child together. Is all that so far gone that you need a stranger to help you communicate?’
‘Sometimes it can be helpful to get an objective insight. I can imagine that.’ I say, before taking a bite of the fluffy brioche.
‘We have one exercise where he asks us questions about ourselves, pretty personal ones might I add. While one is talking to him, the other is not allowed to interrupt and is by that forced to just listen.’ Helena explains. ‘It’s extremely unpleasant. I keep on wondering why I would share all those personal details with him. It makes me pretty rebellious.’

Thank you for the chapter, i really enjoyed this one. Sometimes Tina need to stop overthinking
Another great chapter. Enjoyed Bette & Tina’s interaction with Helena and Winny – very entertaining, at the same time it revealed so much, as Helena said about the night being therapeutical. Very well-written.
My favorite line –
“When I asked her to marry me I knew I would only ask that question once and only to her.”
Bette and Tina need to have some long discussions…. they need to have discussions about their expectations of the other. What role will their careers take in their personal lives? Do they really want children and if so when? Where would they like to live and why? What are their hopes and dreams? What is it that they most fear? How can they remind each other how important they are to one another – beside lots of sex.
They need to have one discussion about the past and then put it away…. take ownership for their own mistakes and choices. Become aware of the signs that things are not right and need to be adjusted. Put their lives on a reasonable schedule – no more of this move to a new city, getting a new job and trying to have a baby all in the same year. They need to schedule some family time and some couple time. And they need to learn to communicate… almost to the point that they empty their minds to each other and hold nothing back. They need to share the duties of house and family together… neither of them totally responsible for say the cooking and the laundry. Joint project builds connection…. and they need connection.
In this chapter, Bette describes what marriage means to her – a life time commitment to one person. That says to me that Bette will never instigate a divorce… if there is to be a divorce, Tina will have to start the process. And even if divorced Bette will never marry again. Those are truly remarkable sentiments for a person in this day and time. Of course if divorced, Bette might see other women. She just won’t purpose to another woman. That is how she feels at this time. I believe she is sincere and I also think that Tina is hearing this for the first time. She probably had no idea how Bette felt about marriage. I find Bette’s sentiment admirable….
Thanks for the chapter…
Great chapter!
Loved the discussion about marriage and how Bette thinks about it. I also believe in a lifetime commitment.
I soooo love Helena in this chapter! :)
