    Uncharted Territory

‘Maybe I should consider starting to date.’

‘I thought you wanted Winny back.’ I remind her as I pull her with me in the direction of the parking lot before she can make another disastrous choice.

‘I do. But it takes two… we will see.’

‘This dress won’t get you neither except for a pneumonia maybe.’ I look at her before starting the engine. ‘Drink at the Ritz?’

Using the statue; Venus, the goddess of love as my guidance I navigate my way through the labyrinth of gravel paths, which is not easy on the Manolo Blahnik’s that I chose to wear for my meeting at the Netflix offices. This offer is really hard to turn down, especially since my writing has been standing on the back burner for a while now. Inspiration is hard to find. A family of ducks cruise along the small canal accompanying me on my way before I turn left into a chestnut tree-lined promenade. Jardin du Luxembourg was always one of my favorite parks in Paris, because of its calm atmosphere. At the end of the lane, at the ponies, Bette is leaning against the wooden railing, looking like she was born and raised here. All my arguments against accepting this offer; it’s too soon, too fast, it would tie us to one place, she countered with pointing out that it would mean another year in Paris and she couldn’t think of a better place to be. As I skip over a few fallen branches a couple of pigeons flutter their wings just to land again next to her. With the silky cyclamen blouse and light jeans, she looks like a fresh breath of air and I fail to ignore my heart skipping a beat. Wrapping my arms around her from behind I reach for her hand. ‘Mmm ice cream.’

‘Hey I’m supposed to keep it safe for her.’ She fakes a protest and vaguely motions at Maddy who waves at me from her pony, before she kisses me quick. ‘If you’re sweet I’ll buy you one too.’

‘You know I’ll do anything for ice cream.’ I say and she offers a smug smirk as we lean against the railing, watching Helena and Winny’s kid that Bette offered to babysit today, completely engrossed in cuddling the manes of a tiny black and white pony. ‘How many rounds did she make till now?’

    1. Another great chapter. Enjoyed Bette & Tina’s interaction with Helena and Winny – very entertaining, at the same time it revealed so much, as Helena said about the night being therapeutical. Very well-written.

      My favorite line –
“When I asked her to marry me I knew I would only ask that question once and only to her.”

    2. Bette and Tina need to have some long discussions…. they need to have discussions about their expectations of the other. What role will their careers take in their personal lives? Do they really want children and if so when? Where would they like to live and why? What are their hopes and dreams? What is it that they most fear? How can they remind each other how important they are to one another – beside lots of sex.

They need to have one discussion about the past and then put it away…. take ownership for their own mistakes and choices. Become aware of the signs that things are not right and need to be adjusted. Put their lives on a reasonable schedule – no more of this move to a new city, getting a new job and trying to have a baby all in the same year. They need to schedule some family time and some couple time. And they need to learn to communicate… almost to the point that they empty their minds to each other and hold nothing back. They need to share the duties of house and family together… neither of them totally responsible for say the cooking and the laundry. Joint project builds connection…. and they need connection.

In this chapter, Bette describes what marriage means to her – a life time commitment to one person. That says to me that Bette will never instigate a divorce… if there is to be a divorce, Tina will have to start the process. And even if divorced Bette will never marry again. Those are truly remarkable sentiments for a person in this day and time. Of course if divorced, Bette might see other women. She just won’t purpose to another woman. That is how she feels at this time. I believe she is sincere and I also think that Tina is hearing this for the first time. She probably had no idea how Bette felt about marriage. I find Bette’s sentiment admirable….

      Thanks for the chapter…
