Uncharted Territory
‘I don’t know what she wants anymore. Well… besides a divorce obviously. The last session with that… that son of a … mediator was like the nine circles of hell.’ She chuckles sarcastically and throws her raven dark hair over her shoulder. Picking up a dried tuft of thyme from the basket at the stall she inhales. ‘Oh this is good, give me the whole basket.’ Handing the basket to the market seller who looks like Charles Aznavour on a holiday, she reaches in her pocket and hands him way more euro’s than she should, without accepting the change. She doesn’t even cook.
‘I thought you didn’t like markets, wasn’t it you who always said it’s where all bacteria’s come to party?’
‘I don’t care as long as I can shop, there is certainly something therapeutical about it and it’s good for the economy. After all I was always one to support small businesses. Merci.’ She thanks the man who hands each of us a small carton cup with hot chocolate. Strolling further down Marché d’Aligre in the 12th arrondissement she continues. ‘When is your meeting with Netflix?’
‘Tomorrow.’ Feeling a hint of excitement in the pit of my stomach just thinking about this opportunity I wrap my hands around the cup and inhale the sweet, delicious smell that can only come from real chocolate not comparable to the instant choco milk that they usually serve in the USA. My agent called last week with an offer to work on a miniseries. The amazing script is set during World War Two in France, Paris mostly. Band of Brothers meets Gone with the Wind. The budget is sky high, which offers endless artistic opportunities and the benefits meet the challenge. For sure people will talk about it long after the air date. It just requires staying another year in Paris.
‘What does Bette say?’
I sigh and remember the look in Bette’s eyes when I put my agent on speaker. As he went on and on about the offer Bette’s smile grew wider with every word. And all I could think off was having to make a decision again that might affect us in one way or the other. ‘Oh she’s ready to stay another year in Paris, she’s ecstatic about it.’

Thank you for the chapter, i really enjoyed this one. Sometimes Tina need to stop overthinking
Another great chapter. Enjoyed Bette & Tina’s interaction with Helena and Winny – very entertaining, at the same time it revealed so much, as Helena said about the night being therapeutical. Very well-written.
My favorite line –
“When I asked her to marry me I knew I would only ask that question once and only to her.”
Bette and Tina need to have some long discussions…. they need to have discussions about their expectations of the other. What role will their careers take in their personal lives? Do they really want children and if so when? Where would they like to live and why? What are their hopes and dreams? What is it that they most fear? How can they remind each other how important they are to one another – beside lots of sex.
They need to have one discussion about the past and then put it away…. take ownership for their own mistakes and choices. Become aware of the signs that things are not right and need to be adjusted. Put their lives on a reasonable schedule – no more of this move to a new city, getting a new job and trying to have a baby all in the same year. They need to schedule some family time and some couple time. And they need to learn to communicate… almost to the point that they empty their minds to each other and hold nothing back. They need to share the duties of house and family together… neither of them totally responsible for say the cooking and the laundry. Joint project builds connection…. and they need connection.
In this chapter, Bette describes what marriage means to her – a life time commitment to one person. That says to me that Bette will never instigate a divorce… if there is to be a divorce, Tina will have to start the process. And even if divorced Bette will never marry again. Those are truly remarkable sentiments for a person in this day and time. Of course if divorced, Bette might see other women. She just won’t purpose to another woman. That is how she feels at this time. I believe she is sincere and I also think that Tina is hearing this for the first time. She probably had no idea how Bette felt about marriage. I find Bette’s sentiment admirable….
Thanks for the chapter…
Great chapter!
Loved the discussion about marriage and how Bette thinks about it. I also believe in a lifetime commitment.
I soooo love Helena in this chapter! :)
