“It’s ok Bette. It’s your job. I understand.” Tina didn’t sound convincing.
Bette got up and retrieved her gun from the end table. She headed to her bedroom to get her keys and other equipment. When she came back to the living room, she leaned down and told Tina, “promise I’ll make it up to you when I get back.”
Tina smiled at her. “Oh my God, wait just one minute” as she ran off to the guestroom. She returned holding a small package. "I got you something.” She told her as she handed it to Bette.
Bette was surprised and it showed on her face. “Why?”
“A small thank you for everything you’ve done for me. Go ahead, open it before you leave. You might be able to use it.”
Bette opened the package to find the engraved pen that Tina had picked out. “Thank you Tina. I love it.”
“Really? Cheryl said you would like it, but I wasn’t sure.”
“It’s perfect. And I will use it in just a few minutes. And every time I use it, I will think of you. Thank you.” She said as she pulled Tina in tight for a hug.
“Ok, make yourself comfortable. I’ll see you in a little while.”
“If you’re lucky …” Tina responded in her best devil-may-care voice as she winked at her.
Bette’s drive to work was plagued with guilt. After just experiencing the most earth-shattering kiss of her life bar-none, with the woman she already felt like she was falling in love with, she had to get up and walk out. I know life is not supposed to be fair, but this sucks.
She hoped that they would be able to pick up where they left off. She hoped that this call-out didn’t scare Tina off or make her have second thoughts. Hell, she just hoped Tina would still be there when she got back. She arrived at the office to perform her duty. Lt. Porter had to collect herself at the door and do what was expected of her. She managed to get through the test without any incidents.
The drive home was slow, but her thoughts were still racing. How many times had her job gotten in the way of her life? How many times had her plans been cancelled for work? How often did she have to work late or extra duty? How many holidays were missed with family? And most importantly, would Tina be able to live with all those different scenarios?

I’m from West Virginia and guns still freak me out a bit. Last time I tried to shoot one my face was too close to it and it kicked back and gave me a cut under my eye. lol I’m glad to see they aren’t jumping into bed already. I always love a good slow burn.

Love this story. I like that they are taking it slow, and I like Tina’s genuine concern for Bette’s safety. Hopefully Bette will continue to be safe on her job. Please post soon.
ok so I hope that if Bette loves her job that she is not pressured to quit because of Tina’s insecurities and that instead she learns to adjust and accept it. If on the other hand she hates her job then let her quit. I already see that we’re in for a slow burn and no speedy updates, bummer…..anywho. I hope you post soon!!! And a bit longer chapters
i love this fic…….it is a great start……i like the whole old-fashioned love thing…….wooing tina off of her feet…..and i love the thought of bette as a cop…….it makes the storyline more interesting, and it certainly opens up alot more that you could write about……no stopping on this fic……to many ways you can take this…….kudo’s and a whole helluva lotta stars for you ldw604
i like it slow too, building the tension, seeing them dating and then being happy
guns are dangerous but if is she has to use for work what can she does? is good to know that they will take easily and slow
I’m from Texas also and though we are not from the deep south, Texas is considered mid-south, we still honor a number of the old ways and one is wooing a lass and sweeping her off her feet. It is so much fun.
Tina has a lot more self control than I do. I grew up in a house that always had/has guns. Heck my dad is a Texan, they have guns in their boots. I can’t wait to see Bette sweep Tina off of her feet. Post soon.
Bette should let it be known at the PD that they can’t keep calling her for any little back up. Looking forward to the courting and wooing even though the winning part has perhaps already been accomplished…LOL!
Tensions rising – & thats just in the readers!
I guess Bette could wear an ankle holster and wider-legged pants! …I don’t like guns either, but it goes with the territory. A police officer has to be ready at all times, even off duty. Never know when a perp might want to get revenge. They also usually don’t list their names or addresses in public directories for the same reason. Good luck, Bette and Tina! Thanks.
Just catching up on your story… your Bette is a very dedicated cop! (But perhaps its time for her to teach her deputies how to use that intoxilyzer on their own ;-) Very nice, thanks for writing it!

Imagine having a girl like Bette say that to you…..WOW Tina is one lucky girl :o)) Great beginning to a very sweet story and I’m glad they are taking things slow, but how slow can they take it??? LOL. Post soon please….
of course I am a Texan also, Dallas Texas to be exact, and theres a lot of old fashion down here for the good and bad. Maybe bad shouldn’t quit her job but become like some sort of superintendent or something where she can still be a cop but not worked the streets but that’s if her and Tina really become serious, other than that deal with it Kennard, that’s cop life. These two are sooooo adorable in this story, I love the way Bette calls her babe and baby after just meeting her #SoFuckingCute
