Bette – NOOOO!!!!
She buries her face in her hands. James appears at the door, a frown stamped on his face.
James – Are you OK, Bette?!
She sighs and looks at him.
Bette – Please close the door, James. I’m not available to anyone …
James – Sorry, Bette …
He leaves and closes the door behind him. She closes her eyes and sighs.
Western Skies Ranch, afternoon: Kit is at the porch when Tina trots away on Minnie, followed by Charlie. The ranch owner watches as they travel toward the valley. She purses her lips and shakes her head.
Western Skies Ranch, evening: Kit is making a phone call.
Kit – Baby sis! How are you doing?
Bette answers from her gallery.
Bette – Hi, Kit! I’m OK …
Kit – You don’t sound OK.
The younger sister sighs.
Bette – I’m just tired.
Kit – How are sales in the gallery?
Bette – Sales are going well.
Kit – Good! Then you can come see Charlie this week.
Bette – I was there not long ago, Kit.
Kit – Yes but …he had a small accident.
Jesus, when it rains, it pours! – she thinks, closing her eyes and pressing her forehead with her fingers.
Bette – What happened?!
Kit – He got a little unruly after you left and hit his leg on the wall of his stall. It got swollen. Jim called Dr. Harmon.
Bette – His leg?! He didn’t tell me!
Kit – Charlie is improving. But come see him anyway.
Bette – Of course! I’ll check flights. I’ll be there as soon as possible!
Kit – You do that!
A day later
Western Skies Ranch, night: Jim’s truck arrives at the house bringing Bette. They leave the truck and Jim carries her small suitcase to the porch.
Bette – So Charlie’s leg is really fine now?
Jim – Oh, yes! It quickly improved after a few days.
Bette – Huh! Kit seemed concerned.
Jim – No. The leg has healed beautifully, Bette! I think he is ready to carry weight again.
Bette – OK. Then I will see him tomorrow. I don’t want him to get excited right now.
