    WESTERN SKIES

Tina – I know. How could you be confused with a man? I just glanced at a figure on a horse. I apologize.

The blonde rests her shoulder against the door, facing the brunette.

Tina – Now, what is your beef with me?

    The brunette sighs.

Bette – I just don’t want Hollywood to disturb our paradise.

Tina – Don’t worry, it’s an Indie movie. And we won’t take long!

Bette – A day is too long!

The producer presses her lips together.

Bette – What is it about?

Tina – Race and prejudice. A young privileged woman falls for a poor Hispanic young man.

Bette – What do you know about race and prejudice? You’re white!

    Tina frowns.

Tina – I adapted the script from a book. The author knows it too well. It’s her parents’ story.

    Bette – Ahh …

Tina – What would you know about race and prejudice?

    Bette – Isn’t that obvious?

Tina – No. It was not obvious to me.

    The rancher smirks.

Bette – So I pass as white.

Tina – It’s obvious that you are also white. I didn’t see color when I first saw you.

Bette – What did you see?

    The blonde chuckles.

Tina – After I first thought that you were a cowboy? Umm … beauty …

    The brunette raises an eyebrow.

    Tina – … and arrogance!

    Bette – Huh!

Tina – Huh, what? You were quite the arrogant!

Bette – And you were not?

    The producer smiles.

Tina – You asked me what I saw in you, not to analyze myself.

    The brunette chuckles.

Tina – What did you see in me?

    Bette – Stubbornness, of course!

    Tina chuckles.

Tina – I am not known for that … usually.

    Bette – And delightful clumsiness.

    Tina – Delightful …?!

Bette – Very. Of the type that brings a smile to one’s face.

Tina – I only remember you smirking.

Bette – That was part of my delight.

    They smile at each other.

Tina – So how is race a factor when you are also privileged? Privilege and beauty often overcome prejudice.

    Bette – Not always.

Tina – A huge ranch in Colorado, a gallery in San Francisco … probably a beautiful place there too …

The brunette stands up and takes her cup to the kitchen.

Bette – I see that Kit has been telling you too much.

Tina – She clearly loves you! You are her pride and joy.

Bette – Her excuse to gossip about me.

They are silent for a moment.

Tina – Well … I hope that you will survive the movie. This cabin is certainly idyllic!

    Bette smirks.

    Bette – And off limits!

    The blonde chuckles.

Tina – Darn! Just as I was about to ask!

    The brunette smiles.

Tina – Thank you again for the help!

    She opens the door.

Tina – I owe you one!

    Bette – Two, actually!

    Tina chuckles.

Tina – OK, two! (pause) See you around?

Bette nods. Tina leaves the cabin and walks over to Minnie. She pats the horse’s face and mutters.

Tina – You little runaway … Do you see the trouble you caused me?

She mounts the horse and looks back at the window. The brunette watches her. She waves and trots away. The horses neigh at each other. She chuckles.

Tina – It was worth it, though!

Tina’s office, evening: Tina and Brian are standing around a table with a big map of the region. The blonde points to several areas.

Tina – And I was in the valley today. There are at least two places for scenes 15 and 20.

    Brian opens the script.

Brian – These are … galloping scenes?

Tina – Yeah. Some beautiful scenery down there, with flat terrain for the horses.

Brian – OK! This is good!
