When You Least Expect It – Chapter 15

"Because you’re not the one who’s going to have to stay up with her tonight" Bette interjected, answering for her girlfriend. It was something Kevin couldn’t ignore, he was beyond fed up with Bette.

    "Bette" Tina warned.

"Oh and you will?" He snapped, ignoring Tina. His eyes on Bette.

"Actually yeah" Bette said proudly, smugly. "I will"

Kevin’s eyes went straight from Bette to Tina, "You two live together?"

"Not that it’s any of your business-"

"Technically no" Tina sighed, cutting off Bette with a tone slightly higher than that of her girlfriend’s. She was getting annoyed with the dispute between Kevin and Bette. "But we spend almost every night together. Whenever Bette’s not here, Angie and I usually stay at her place"

Kevin ran his tongue over his teeth in irritation, "I don’t really know what to say about that"

"There’s nothing you can say about it Kevin" Tina snapped, "Like it or not, Bette and I are together. So either deal with that or you’re just going to have to figure out how you’re going to deal with it. Now, do you want to see your daughter or not?"

Bette sat back in her seat smug as ever, finally letting that bright smile form on her face. Kevin looked to her in annoyance before looking back at Tina and nodding. He placed his cup on the coffee table and got up from his seat just as Tina did, ready to follow her to Angie’s room.

Bette was next on her feet but stopped on her tracks the moment Tina whipped around to give her a harsh look. It was a warning, to stay where she was or suffer the consequences. Bette was taken aback by Tina’s look but knew better than to defy her girlfriend. She shrugged innocently and watched as Tina disappeared behind the wall.

    —–

"Okay and what about the South wall? . . . We can’t. If we move that piece it’ll throw off the entire layout . ."

Bette paced back and forth on the patio outside as she listened to Janice offer suggestions for their upcoming show, rubbing the back of her neck in growing frustration.

    "What if we just-"

She somehow managed to hear the low sounds of Tina and Kevin’s voices as they walked down the hallway and back into the living room. Bette turned and looked into the house while her girlfriend talked animatedly to her ex.

    Bette? Hello, you still there?

Bette blinked, "Huh? Oh y-yeah I’m still here. Sorry I just got distracted"

Janice chuckled I understand. Look, I’m sorry for calling you while you’re with Tina. We can finish this tomorrow.

Bette shook her head as she watched Tina walk Kevin to the door, "No, no its okay. Its better we get this all sorted out now so that tomorrow we can work on the lighting"

Are you sure? We still have plenty of time until the opening. There’s no rush.

Bette watched as Kevin pulled Tina in for a hug. It was slightly awkward just like the first but it still irritated the brunette nonetheless. She ran her tongue over her teeth in frustration.

    Bette?

"Still here, sorry" She shook her head, "So about the South wall . ."

Bette trailed off as Tina closed the door and made her way to the bedroom, stopping at the beginning of the hallway to give the brunette another look. Without a word, she made her way down the hall leaving her nervous girlfriend behind.

"Jan, I’m gonna have to call you back"

A soft breath of laughter crackled over the phone You in trouble again?

    "Yup" Bette sighed, "Big time"
