    White Lie 6

“I felt like you thought I was pushing you away,” Bette explained her question. “I don’t want to think that something I said or did made you do something you wouldn’t otherwise do.”

“I’m much more my own person than I used to be,” Tina said. “Whatever happened between me and Brenda was independent of you.”

“So you slept with her,” Bette said resignedly, staring at her glass as if it was capable of soothing her consternation.

“For fuck sakes Bette, no I didn’t,” Tina finally said. “We went back to her place, had a glass of wine after dinner, she showed me her collection and I went home.”

“Did you kiss her goodnight?” Bette asked, glancing up again. She had nothing to lose and only information to gain.

    “Bette!”

“Okay okay, don’t answer that,” Bette replied. “But just for the record, I’m glad you didn’t sleep with her.”

    “Why do you care?”

“I’ll always care about you,” Bette said softly. “You’re the one I thought I was going to spend my life with.”

Tina was silent for a moment before she mustered the will to speak.

“You can’t say things like that to me,” Tina’s voice was filled with emotion. “It’s hard for me to think of what ‘should have been’ between us.”

“You think of that sometimes?” Bette asked, surprised.

“Of course I do,” Tina said. She thought it was obvious.

“So do I,” Bette replied, her voice barely above a whisper.

The chime of the clock rang to denote the hour. It jarred them both out of their reverie.

“I should pack her up and get home,” Tina said as she stood. “I have to shower and change for tonight.”

“Right, of course,” Bette stood as well. “I’ll help you get her things together.”

They moved silently around the house, preparing for Tina and Angelica’s departure. They kept their distance upon saying goodbye, both acutely aware of the feelings they had both just admitted to.

    **********

Bette closed the door after they drove away. She contemplated her options for only a few minutes, but she knew what she had to do next. She didn’t take the time to shower. Instead she took a moment to slip on something more suitable.

Within a half an hour, she was walking up the stairs to Jodi’s studio. One of the advantages to being the Dean was ownership of a master key, allowing her access to every room in the building.

    1. Bette’s doing the right thing, professionally and personally, by Jodi. Let’s hope she can do the right thing for Tina and herself as well. Thanks for the post, jks.

    2. so weve just had a plethoria of great stories today. for now yours being the last for me to read. how do you do it, swimmie??? keep us so enthralled. thx

    3. that would be so perfect for the show but then they won’t have any drama left LOL i think you captured jodi’s feelings perfectly…let’s see how tina will react and if brenda gonna be a problem

    4. Glad that’s over and it’s about time that Bette dumped Jodi, if only she would on the show and it does look as though it is coming to that, just wish they would hurry and get it done. Now that Bette has taken care of that little business it is now time for her to go get Tina and tell her just how much she loves her and wants her back and tht she would do anything to get her back. Great post Swimmie. PPS

    5. Sweet, your Bette seems to have a brain. She is actually showing character growth appropriately assessing the end of her relationship. Now, she needs to stick around and prove to Tina that she wants something with her.. that is real. Not just because she ended it with Jodi..and Tina has someone.

    6. thanks for this great story swimmie. i only wish the show had done some of this and then some over the years. i mean there is enough drama for one episode in one glance from b to t! but i guess we have to take the lemons and make lemonade and so this my friend, I’m using for the sugar! PPS

    7. You know I can not believe that I had never put those two incidents together about the robbery and the gun sculpter, that caused Bette to be distant from Jodi, until now. FF usually does make the picure more clearly than the show itself. I still wished that IC had broken Bette and Jodi up before she hooked back up with Tina, but as they say Ke Sar Sar…what was done is done. Off to the club.

    8. Yeah Jodi…there are lots of reasons why it wasn’t working…like 17 Reasons! The first time I felt SOME kindness in that woman was when she wouldn’t let Tina drive. Other than that she is very selfish, self centered, critical, rude, and a stuck up snob. I tried to give her a chance with Bette in my mind, but this season in particular, it just shows that she is by far all about herself and what she wants, and could care less about her other half. So, that being said….YAY for this fic! Thanks Swimmie.
