    When Fate Meets Destiny—Chapter 4

    Chapter 4

    Bette’s POV

Present-picking up where Chapter 3 left off

Tina steps out onto the patio and hands me a cup of coffee. “Two creamers and one sugar right?” She says as I inwardly gasp.  She remembered.  When she was home from Stanford, or when we all would visit her there, coffee had always been our bonding catalyst.  Melissa was not a coffee drinker.  It was tea for her.  So when Tina started joining me and Sylvia on the weekends for coffee that’s when our bond started.  We were friends but we started getting closer the summer before she left for her freshman year at Stanford

“You remembered” I answer giving her an appreciative smile and I see her cheeks redden on her fair skin.  I never really noticed that before.  Maybe I just didn’t want to notice.  I guess I’m making myself aware of these things now since I know how she feels about me.

“How could I forget?.  Coffee has always been our obsession” she says laughing and I do the same.  Wow.  I’m looking at her in a whole new light right now and it’s making the breath hitch in my throat.  She has grown into the most beautiful woman I think I have ever seen.  Not that she wasn’t pretty before but gone or her teenage features and the maturity that has grown in its place is absolutely breathtaking.

“It’s crazy how much we have in common” I say and she nods taking a sip of her coffee and giggles

“I always found it fascinating though.  We had basketball, our coffee fetish, civil engineering, our love for nature, astronomy, and of course our love for my Mother” she says and we both grow quiet for a moment in thought of Sylvia.  I miss her so much.  She shakes her head slightly and sighs

“So?…You said you wanted to talk about your divorce…But you don’t have to.  Just know I’m here though if you do want to talk”

She has always been supportive and understanding.  I am so lucky to have her in my life

“Well..” I take another sip of my perfectly made coffee before setting it down and wrapping both my hands around the cup

    1. Seems that Bette and Melissa worked rather diligently to try to save their marriage. If their problems seem to begin eleven years ago with their move to New York… that’s a long period for things to break down and become unresolvable. And they did move back to Philadelphia a few years later, but still they could not resolve their differences enough to sustain their marriage. Yet, they love each other still. I wonder… did they really love each other? Or perhaps they loved the idea of the other. In some people, they form an image of who the other is and have a tendency to to ignore the reality of who they are. No person is perfect. All people have flaws… a relationship is sometimes determined on whether each one can live with the flaws or not. Perhaps a judgement that the cost out weighs the benefits? Or is there a more suitable partner elsewhere? Something about Bette and Melissa’s relationship says something like this is going on. From the story so far, Bette has been devoted to Melissa and to Maddy. She has not allowed anything to challenge her relationship to Melissa, not even her repressed attraction to Tina. She may not have been honest with herself, but she did not allow it to get between her and Melissa. It appears to me, that between Melissa and Bette, sometimes love just simply is not enough.

Tina’s hearing of the conversation between Bette and Melissa on having a second child is heart breaking. This would be a major issue in this couple where one wants another child and the other is showing signs that it is not going to happen. I imagine that this would not be the only conversation between Bette and Melissa on the subject. I can see that this would be the beginning of the dissolution of their marriage. It would appear that the sole glue to keep them together then would become Maddy.

This was a very thought provoking chapter on Bette’s history. Now that Bette is going to begin to pursue Tina…. I am anxious to see how she does that. Under the right circumstances and the right conditions, I do not think it will take very long for these two to become a couple.

      Thanks for the update.
