    When Fate Meets Destiny—Chapter 4

“…It’s been difficult to say the least.  I didn’t want a divorce because I felt like I would see that as a failure and I do still love Melissa.  I just didn’t see that she had emotionally moved on and I think she stayed with me because I practically begged her to. I was just desperate to keep us together” I hated admitting that because it makes me look selfish and naive

I look up and see Tina shake her head. She places her hand on my arm and gives it a gentle squeeze “Don’t you ever feel bad for trying to save your marriage.  I think your love for each other gave you both hope that you could work it out.  And your love for Maddie kept you together as well.  Don’t you ever blame yourself for trying”

I sighed and slightly nodded. I know I shouldn’t blame myself but when I look back at things I can see I was so blind to everything happening

“Melissa didn’t want to leave Pennsylvania.  She never wanted to move here. She was happy there. She was chief nurse at Three Rivers Hospital.  Maddie had just started 1st grade”. I pause and took a sip of my coffee and look at Tina who was patiently waiting for me to continue “I had just finished a major bridge construction project in New York. I had collaborated with Gold Coast Engineering here on that project and was offered a chance to head the New Bay Bridge Construction project.  This was my dream not hers.  She told me she didn’t want to move but she wasn’t going to deny me this opportunity” I sigh and shake my head.  “I feel like when looking back on it that was the beginning of the end for us.  However I didn’t see it at the time”

I again feel Tina’s hand gently squeeze my forearm

“You didn’t know what would happen.  I saw the love you both had for each other Bette”

I nodded “Yeah.  But it wasn’t long after we moved here we began having problems. We just started wanting different things”

    Tina’s POV

I can’t help but to think back to the first time I witnessed Bette and Melissa wanting different things.  And I’m wondering if she is thinking about this very thing right now.  It was the day of my high school graduation and Bette had told my Mom she wanted to have a party for me there at her house the next day and make it a pool party. I was ok with it until I heard Bette and Melissa arguing early that morning…

    1. Seems that Bette and Melissa worked rather diligently to try to save their marriage. If their problems seem to begin eleven years ago with their move to New York… that’s a long period for things to break down and become unresolvable. And they did move back to Philadelphia a few years later, but still they could not resolve their differences enough to sustain their marriage. Yet, they love each other still. I wonder… did they really love each other? Or perhaps they loved the idea of the other. In some people, they form an image of who the other is and have a tendency to to ignore the reality of who they are. No person is perfect. All people have flaws… a relationship is sometimes determined on whether each one can live with the flaws or not. Perhaps a judgement that the cost out weighs the benefits? Or is there a more suitable partner elsewhere? Something about Bette and Melissa’s relationship says something like this is going on. From the story so far, Bette has been devoted to Melissa and to Maddy. She has not allowed anything to challenge her relationship to Melissa, not even her repressed attraction to Tina. She may not have been honest with herself, but she did not allow it to get between her and Melissa. It appears to me, that between Melissa and Bette, sometimes love just simply is not enough.

Tina’s hearing of the conversation between Bette and Melissa on having a second child is heart breaking. This would be a major issue in this couple where one wants another child and the other is showing signs that it is not going to happen. I imagine that this would not be the only conversation between Bette and Melissa on the subject. I can see that this would be the beginning of the dissolution of their marriage. It would appear that the sole glue to keep them together then would become Maddy.

This was a very thought provoking chapter on Bette’s history. Now that Bette is going to begin to pursue Tina…. I am anxious to see how she does that. Under the right circumstances and the right conditions, I do not think it will take very long for these two to become a couple.

      Thanks for the update.
