    Chapter 16

Bette and Nyah exchanged a single glance, no words, just shared resolve and moved. They slipped from the office like shadows, careful not to disturb the rhythm of the night.

Outside, the compound lay still, bathed in silence so deep it hummed. Nyah led the way, crouched low, weaving through the now familiar paths. Bette followed close behind, every sense sharpened, her breath shallow.

They reached the elephant dormitories first, their footsteps light against the packed earth. Bette crouched by the side panel, rapping it gently in a rhythm that the night staff would recognize, an old signal they’d established in case of emergencies.

One by one, sleepy eyes appeared in the half-barn doors, groggy murmurs rising as the caregivers stirred inside. Nyah moved along the outer wall, softly calling names, while Bette delivered whispered but firm orders.

“No lights,” she whispered again. “Listen to me, gather the calves. Get them into the brush. Now. As far from the compound as you can go. Take only what you need. Quiet. Fast.”

A rustle of blankets. Whispered affirmations. Then, a figure appeared in the doorway. Jonas, barefoot and half-buttoned, blinking against the dark. Bette stood to meet him, stepping in close so there could be no mistake.

“You’re in charge,” she said, her voice firm. “You get them out. Every calf. Especially the rhino. I’m trusting you with him.”

Jonas opened his mouth to speak, but she cut him off with a look.

“No discussion. You disobey, and they die. That’s the weight of it.”

He nodded, his throat bobbing. “Understood.”

    “Good. Go.”

The quiet coordination inside the dormitories was a marvel, blankets gathered, ropes untied, bottles secured but no matter how practised the team, there was no silencing baby elephants.

As the youngest calves were gently nudged from their straw beds, a soft trumpet rose in protest, followed by a higher-pitched rumble that echoed faintly across the compound.

Another calf, emboldened by the break in routine, saw the darkness not as danger, but as an unexpected opportunity for play, nudging a companion with its trunk in an invitation to a midnight chase.

Bette’s jaw tightened as one of the handlers tried to placate the smallest bull with an early milk feed, coaxing the baby forward with a bottle from the emergency night stock.
