    Dana and Alice throw their housewarming luau, Bette and Tina are caught en flagrante (sort of), Helena wants to show Lara how much she’s loved, and Shane struggles with her feelings. (Oh, and there’s a Hawaiian vacation video too!)

    Shane slept comfortably even though it was the middle of the day. Truth was she found herself enjoying the solitude she had every time she took care of Dave while Alice and Dana traveled. It was also a convenient hideaway from her troubles, as was the drinking she was indulging in more frequently. These back-to-back trips were perfect for her anti-social mood. The light snoring of the body next to her threatened to wake her, so she ran her hand along his hairy chest in an effort to get him to move. Soon enough he rolled on his back and turned his head into her neck, his warm breaths lulling her back to sleep.

    This was exactly how Alice found them when she arrived home, having taken an earlier flight from New York so that she could get a jump on final preparations for the “housewarming” luau she and Dana were throwing the next night. Dave bounded from the bed with a happy yelp the moment he sensed Alice’s presence, nearly tossing Shane to the floor.

    “Hey buddy!” Alice was nearly as excited to see him. “Did you miss me? I’m sorry we had to leave, but this is it for a while now, I promise.” She squatted down to eye level and accepted the sloppy, exuberant greeting that smelled vaguely of minty dog treats.

    Shane grudgingly pulled herself up, propping herself against the headboard, watching the reunion through dark, slotted eyes. Her brain was firing at half-speed, and while she knew there was something wrong with this picture, she couldn’t quite place what it was. Nothing in the scene before her was lost on Alice. The bed was surrounded with all manner of half empty order-in and take out containers, a couple of cases of drained beer cans and the remnants of two fifths of tequila. The DVD player’s logo bounced lazily from corner to corner on the television and the curtains were drawn tightly against the late afternoon sun.

    “Christ, have you left this room even once since we left?” Alice’s tone was gentle in spite of her directness.

    “Yes, I’ve left the room,” Shane answered sarcastically, even though she’d only left for a few hours here and there to tend to the clients she hadn’t been able to reschedule. She’d all but abandoned Wax to the bouncy little manager she’d hired just before Alice and Dana’s Hawaiian vacation a month ago. The realization struck. “You guys are not supposed to be home until tomorrow morning,” she accused triumphantly. “What the fuck?”
