    Luau (Chapter 4) -FINALE-

“There’s one more thing we wanted to share with you,” Dana said quietly, “and for this we took our inspiration from Tina and Bette.”

The screens flickered back to life on a close up of Alice that pulled back to reveal her in a simple strapless white silk dress, holding a bouquet, standing barefoot at the surf line of their private beach at sunset. The camera panned to the right to reveal Dana, also barefoot, in crisp white linen slacks and a flowing white linen blouse. They joined hands as they walked the final few steps to the waiting minister. Traditional vows were exchanged before each was invited to speak, the one detail Dana hadn’t thought of. Alice went first, her already welling eyes spilling over.

“So you know our family is going to kill us for this, right?” Hearty laughter rang through the room. “But in this, like everything else, Dane, you’ve made my dreams come true. No one else in this world understands me like you do. You make me feel more like me just by being you. I know from the bottom of my soul that we were born to love each other.”

Dana couldn’t control herself. She leaned in and kissed Alice tenderly before the minister interrupted them with a good-natured reminder that it was Dana’s turn. They pulled apart sheepishly, their foreheads still touching when she began.

“It’s always been you Al,” Dana spoke in a soft, strong voice. She lifted her head and held Alice’s gaze as she continued. “I knew it the first time we met. No matter what I’ve needed, how lost I’ve been, how afraid…” she paused as her own tears began to fall. “…how happy I’ve been, how successful, how grateful…you’ve been there. I was only half of me without you.”

This time Alice broke the rules and kissed Dana lovingly. The minister cleared her throat, causing them to pull apart again. Another peal of laughter erupted from their friends as they watched.

“By the authority vested in my by God and, someday soon let’s hope, the state of Hawaii, I am delighted to pronounce you married. NOW…you may each kiss your bride.”

The cater waiters managed to serve champagne and sparkling cider during the video without being noticed. As the lights came up, the crowd searched for Dana and Alice, expecting them to be near the monitors, however the happy couple had circled around to pull back the screens and position themselves next to their wedding cake, where Dave joined them. He gave a little bark and everyone turned to find Dana and Alice in the midst of kiss. As one, they stood and applauded. Al and Dane opened their eyes but did not immediately break the kiss, prompting another swell of applause.

“Welcome to our wedding reception,” Alice finally managed to say. “We couldn’t imagine sharing our happiness with anyone but you, our closest family and friends.”

It was Shane who had the presence of mind to step forward and raise her glass. She unconsciously looked directly at Beth as she spoke.

“I think I speak for everyone when I say that you guys are incredible and we are all honored to be here. Here’s to you Dana and Alice, and to a long and happy life together.”

Helena picked up her knife and started tapping her glass, followed immediately by Bette and Tina. Alice and Dana kissed again. And again, giggling the whole time. There was a moment of wonderful, affectionate silence.

“We love you guys too,” Dana said and stole another kiss. “Now let’s have some cake!”
