After getting settled into a room that impressed all of them, Bette went down to the pool with Angelica while Tina organized the room the way she wanted it and took out what she wanted from their suitcases. They would be there a week, so she wanted to feel comfortable. And with the immensity of space they had, she knew that wouldn’t be a problem. It was more than spacious, and both beds were big enough for an entire family.
Once she had finished getting comfortable, Tina put on her own bathing suit, grabbed a towel, and wrapped it around herself to head down to the pool.
In the elevator, she tried not to notice the obvious stares from two men standing beside her, frustrated that it could worry her even in such a populated area. When she was alone, she tended to worry about such attention.
“So … there’s a pool here,” one of the men smiled, just as they’d reached the main level. “Meeting your … husband down there?”
To sidestep what might become even greater interest, she didn’t correct them. She simply answered “No” and stepped out to walk down to the pool.
“Wife?” the other man laughed, just as they stepped out, watching her go.
And unbeknownst to Tina, the urge to stand up for herself was alight. She turned on her heels and looked back at them. “Yes. I have a wife, and she’s wonderful.”
The men looked at each other, sensing that she was becoming a little too defensive for their playful teasing.
“I have a daughter too. Would you like me to dip back into my family history for you, too? Medical records maybe?”
The men left in an awkward silence, but Tina smiled there to herself. She felt much better.
Bette laughed later, when she told her the story over dinner. And Angelica was proud.
“Good. That’s why we came here, Mom. You should stand up for yourself. If I was gay, I would be all over anyone who harassed me.”
Bette chuckled as she brought another big leaf of salad to her mouth. “I believe it.”
“Hey, I consider myself a human rights activist.”
Tina smiled at her daughter. “Hunny, I support you in everything you do, too. I hope you know that.” She watched Angelica take another big bite of her food, stealing a glance at Bette before looking back to her daughter. “I’ll always support you.”

As I have said in some previous comments, I so love Angie, I had a feeling that Ralph was going to cross the line-Bette let him off easy. I am so in love with how you write this family. Sad to see the story come to an end, but thank you so much for sharing your talent.

Such an amazing story. A snapshot of contemporary Americana. Bette is ticked off w/Ralph (who names their kid Ralph nowadays/) just as any parent would be. She’s not embarrassed to stick up for her kid. Bette accepts her own gayness and doesn’t try to hide it as if it is something to be ashamed of even when chastise Ralph in front of his Mom. I love all the thoughts that are in italics so we get a glimpse into their own feelings. Please don’t end this story. Consider bringing us episodes of other moments in their lives. This is one great family.
So sad this story gonna end soon, but hopefully u will give us another great story. Angie indeed had wonderful relationship with her patents that made me jealous. And the tibette this story presented is romantic and hilarious. Thanks for your story again. Really appreciate!
