The Set Up (29)
“Do you think I’m gay?” Angelica asked at last, wiping her mouth with her napkin to look plainly at her mother.
The waiter backed himself out of the conversation, and Bette hid her smile in her hand.
Tina chuckled, “Hunny, I didn’t say that. That’s not what I meant.”
“Believe me, Mom. Half the time, I wish I was gay. I see what you and Bette have, and I can’t imagine why anyone would want anything else … but I think that it’s possible to find that with a guy. And I sure hope so, what with my frustrating attraction to boys.”
Bette was shocked, eyes wide as Angelica simply took another spoonful of soup into her mouth, as if nothing had been said at all. Bette exchanged glances with Tina, and then looked to the girl again.
“Hunny … what?”
Angelica looked up. “What? Sometimes I just think it would be easier being gay – and I know how that sounds. I just mean … I see the way you guys are together, and … well, I get … a little jealous. You know, now and then.”
Bette smiled, arching her brow. “Jealous? Of weird me and your dorky mom?” She knew she would pay for that comment later, but she couldn’t resist.
“Well … I don’t know. All I do know is that I’m not into girls. I just believe we should all be activists for equal rights. You know?”
Fuck yeah. Bette cleared the thought with a smile. “Yes, absolutely.”
Tina joined in on the conversation once again, “Angie, I just mean that whatever you choose to do – professions, friends, pets, love – just know that I’m …” She reached out and took Angelica’s hand to gather her girl’s attention. “I’m always on your side. I … want you to know that.”
“I know, Mom.”
“And Ralph was a snake anyways,” Bette smirked, picking at her salad again.
“He was not,” Angelica sighed, rolling her eyes as they all went back to their food. “He’s just a boy.”
“Staring at Kelly what’s-her-name and all that business?” Bette started, looking around, “If you ask me, he’s a real piece of sh-”
“Bette!” Tina interjected, silencing her wife with a powerful look, turning back to Angelica. “Hunny, please never generalize like that. Trust me. If you say something enough … you even start to believe it. It’s not boys that are the problem. It’s only some boys.”

As I have said in some previous comments, I so love Angie, I had a feeling that Ralph was going to cross the line-Bette let him off easy. I am so in love with how you write this family. Sad to see the story come to an end, but thank you so much for sharing your talent.

Such an amazing story. A snapshot of contemporary Americana. Bette is ticked off w/Ralph (who names their kid Ralph nowadays/) just as any parent would be. She’s not embarrassed to stick up for her kid. Bette accepts her own gayness and doesn’t try to hide it as if it is something to be ashamed of even when chastise Ralph in front of his Mom. I love all the thoughts that are in italics so we get a glimpse into their own feelings. Please don’t end this story. Consider bringing us episodes of other moments in their lives. This is one great family.
