"How do you feel about a weekend away together? Before your schedule gets filled with a new project?"
"Do you have something in mind?"
"Solvang?"
"Wine country – that would be a nice get away," Tina sighed. "It’s not too far – especially if we leave from my place. The drive only takes a couple of hours."
"We’ll look at possible dates some time this weekend."
They fell into a silence as the short trip continued. Bette focused on the traffic and Tina occasionally glanced at her, comforted by how she felt at the prospect of spending so much time away from what she had previously considered her life’s routine.
They were both developing new routines, including the reality of an ever evolving commitment to each other.
Chapter 12
"Let’s explore the back garden," Tina said. "Then we’ll walk to one of the wine bars and do a tasting."
"Tee – five minutes!" Bette said. "We just got here; I want to put away some of my things."
"I haven’t had a holiday in almost a year," Tina said. "And this is such a cute town!"
"I was going for romantic," Bette said as she reached to hang up a top in the closet.
"It’s romantic that you took care of all the planning for our weekend away," Tina said. "Beautiful bed and breakfast, walking distance from anywhere we could possibly want to be."
She was looking through one of the tourist brochures from the ornate antique desk that occupied the corner of the room.
"Is there anything about the history of how Solvang came to be?" Bette asked.
"It was established as a settlement in the 1800s by people from Denmark," Tina replied.
"Hence the architecture," Bette said.
"And the bakeries," Tina noted. "There are five within walking distance that I’ve discovered so far."
"We’re in a community known for wine and baked goods; what better holiday could there be?"
"It has a European flavor to it," Tina said. "It doesn’t even feel like we’re in California anymore."
"I’m all set," Bette zipped her suitcase and placed it on its end in the closet. "You wanted to go out to the gardens?"
