    Amicus Curiae

"You’re so sweet," Tina said as she slipped her hand into Bette’s. "You are romantic when given the opportunity."
    "You inspire it in me."
"Let’s head back and see what other romantic things I can get you to say," Tina said.
    "Romantic?"
"Or erotic, I’m not picky," Tina shrugged.
Bette veered into a courtyard between two buildings and pulled Tina close before kissing her deeply. Much to her surprise, she felt Tina’s hand move higher up her inner thigh to the point where she felt compelled to take a step back.
    "You’re drunk," Bette said.
"Little bit," Tina replied with a smirk. "And I’m always more easily aroused if alcohol has been part of the equation."
"Let me file that for future reference," Bette said. "I think we should get back to our room."
"I don’t want to live with you yet, but I still love you," Tina said.
"I still love you, even though you don’t want to live with me," Bette looked back to offer the assurance.
    "Maybe some day?"
"Maybe we’ll get married first, like they used to in the old days," Bette said.
"That’s a radical idea; reclaim the heterosexual paradigm from the fifties and sixties to proclaim our equality."
"Get married, have babies, change the world."
    "You want kids?" Tina asked.
    "I want everything with you."
"You’re lucky I won’t remember this conversation in the morning," Tina said.
"Too bad you won’t remember this conversation in the morning."
"Snippets. I’ll think it was a dream. Talking about marriage and children."
"Won’t the emotion inherent to such topics transcend a few glasses of wine?"
"I think I’m beyond a few glasses and on my way to counting in bottles," Tina replied.
"Don’t be ridiculous," Bette laughed. "You wouldn’t be able to walk a straight line."
"I haven’t been able to walk a straight line since I was a freshman in college," Tina quipped.
    "Lucky for me," Bette replied.
"Oh I guarantee you’re going to get lucky tonight…"
"If I’d known this was your response to a few glasses of wine, I would have done a better job of stocking my pantry with the best California has to offer."
"I think you’re the best California has to offer," Tina said.
"You’re dangerously close to being romantic; better watch your step."
"And I have no such luxury – you’re going to remember every word we just said," Tina said.
    "Guaranteed."
They enjoyed a leisurely walk back to their B & B after which they spent several hours reminding each other why they had even been contemplating the possibility of giving up the autonomy that they both cherished so much.
