"Would gardening be your hobby if you had a lot of free time?"
"I would love to make a living at gardening," Tina said. "But I would miss the intellectual stimulation inherent to the study and application of law."
"When do you have to decide whether or not you’re returning to your faculty position?"
"I will have a bit more bargaining power after the supreme court decision is delivered," Tina said. "But I already committed to teaching one course for first year law students next year."
    "What course is that?"
"Constitutional law," Tina replied. "I don’t know what I was thinking though – the subject matter is my passion, but the class is only offered in the evening."
"Stay at my place the night you teach it," Bette said. "You’re close to work the next morning. You don’t have a long drive home after the class is over…"
"I’m already staying over almost every Friday night," Tina said. "I don’t want to be a bother."
"Waking up to you is never a bother," Bette said. "It makes me think I’ve found someone I could share a home with."
"Are you tapping into my disdain for commuting to slyly suggest we try living together part time?"
    "Was my approach too practical?"
"There’s nothing wrong with being practical," Tina said. "But I don’t think we should downplay the importance of such an arrangement."
"It’s more than ‘I love you’, but decidedly less than a proposal of marriage," Bette said.
"I love spending time with you. I love that you look over your reading glasses when you glance at me. I love it when we argue. I love that you’re strong enough and smart enough to convince me when I’m wrong about something."
    "I feel a ‘but’ coming."
"But I wonder at whether our respective need for independence will allow us to share a house full time."
"Tina, I love you. Sometimes to see where a relationship is headed, you have to take a leap," Bette said. "Never mind, we’re here to enjoy a holiday. I didn’t have any intention of talking to you about it this weekend."
"Don’t say never mind, you know how that drives me crazy. We’re talking about it, let’s talk."
