When You Least Expect It – Chapter 14

Tina quickly washed her hands in the kitchen sink as the sound of the doorbell rang in her ears. She grabbed a hand towel on her way to answer the door, the bell ringing in her ears a second time.

"Coming!" She called as she dried her hands on the towel, rolling her eyes at Alice’s impatience.

She opened the door ready to give her friend a piece of her mind but who she saw on the other end made her words lodge in her throat. It wasn’t Alice.

    Bette

Time seemed to stand still for both Bette and Tina, neither able to so much as move let alone look away.

Tina half wondered what Bette was doing on her porch instead of Alice, the other half sending a wave of excitement though her body. Tina had hoped that Bette wanted to see her just as much as she wanted to see Bette, offering to drop off Angie as an excuse to do so.

For days Tina had tried to contact Bette, to apologize and explain for her slip up but every attempt had been shot down before she was even given the chance. Now however, the tables had turned and Bette was standing in front of Tina with intentions to reconcile. Tina had hoped so anyway. She really, really hoped so.

"Um" Bette cleared her throat as she bounced Angelica in her arms, readjusting the sleeping baby to a higher position on her chest. "Alice had an emergency so she asked me to drop off Angie. She said to tell you that she was sorry"

"Oh" Tina said softly with the smallest bit of disappointment, realizing that Bette hadn’t been there to make up after all. Ignoring the wave of sadness coursing through her body, she forced a thin smile and cleared her own throat. "Do you want me to take her?"

Bette quickly glanced at a sleeping Angie, "Actually, do you mind if I put her in the crib myself? I kinda miss doing that"

Tina shook her head as she took a step back, gesturing for Bette to answer the house. "Not at all, please"
