    Nobis Pacem Chapter 1

“Doesn’t hurt that she’s smokin’ hot, does it?” Jules asked with a wink. Diane thwacked her shoulder. Jules immediately pulled one of Diane’s hands to her lips and mouth something to her, which mollified Diane.

I said nothing, but I could feel my face begin to heat up. And not from the fire.

“She’s totally unlike everyone else you’ve gone out with, Aerin. I mean, she’s as sexy as the day and night are long, and smart … Diane or Bette or Tina smart … I mean. And sophisticated to the max. Always dresses like she’s about to be photographed for a layout in a high-fashion magazine. She puts everyone else in the shade in that category, doesn’t she? Except for maybe Marissa Wheeler.” Jules said, mentally ticking off Chris’ attributes.

“But most of all, she clearly cares about you,” Jules added that last one softly.

“It’s the last one that scares you, doesn’t it? You aren’t intimidated by all the other stuff. But the caring thing … freaks you out?” she asked, pining me down with the laser focus version of her stare, which she didn’t use often. Only when she was trying to suss me out. Like now. With her hand still holding my chin up, but maybe even without it, I felt like I couldn’t escape my friend’s penetrating inquiry.

She looked deeply into my eyes, and I knew she’d found the answer to her question there.

    Diane did, too.

“Are you afraid she may stop caring about you if she gets to know you more?” Diane asked gently. “Are you the one stopping anything from happening?”

I shifted my gaze from one to the other, confusion registering in my pained look.

“I don’t know if she’s just taking pity on me, or if she’ll be scared off by this darkness I still feel, or –“I started, stumbling over my words.

“Or if she’ll grow tired of you or move on to someone else you think would be more her equal?” Diane asked when I faltered.

“You’re not alone in feeling that way, Aerin,” she continued. “I’ve felt that with Jules, more often in the past, I admit, but sometimes, it comes over me still.”

“D!” Jules let go of my chin as she whipped around to face her partner. “How many times –“

      • Here in spirit. But this is about a few special L words that play out in a couple’s life in another part of town. In the fringes of the world of the series I’ve been writing; but different. Hope you like it.

    1. Will try this again. Left a message about 4:00 this morning and something happened, it’s not posted. My message was to thank you for posting such a beautiful love story. And that I hope this story will be continued we would like to know what happens to Aerin in the future. Thanks for sharing.

    2. Dainty, Hellbent, and new friends: thanks for the comments. Honestly: was tough to pull this together, but it was worth it. Am v glad you liked it. Ok. I hear you. It may take a while for an update on her story, but it will be coming.

      • Well this was a pleasant surprise. I am always seeking an episode from your creativity. So much, I had to buy a smaller electronic device so that I might read your input on the go. Now, for me buying another electronic anything is saying a lot. I am one of the “dial phone” “get up and change the channel” “do not Text me and expect an answer” old school DIE HARD. But, your writing genius persuaded me to become a mobile reader at my neighborhood “coffee house.” Please continue to write

    3. Beautiful story. I could feel Aerin’s struggle. I would love to read about the 18 months in between their first time and Chris’ final moments. I sure it would be moving.
