    Nobis Pacem Chapter 1

With that I broke and leaned into her, sobbing quietly at first. Surprised, she drew me closer and pulled me up as she lay back down again, against the cushions she’d arranged on the high-back edge of the sofa.

All the pent-up emotions I’d been holding back soon burst out in waves, overcoming me with their unexpected force. Is it physics? Am I now helpless before all this emotion because I’ve kept them walled up, behind a dam I wished was impregnable? The dam’s broken now, and I’m afraid the resulting deluge could drown me.

I cried like I’d never had before, and I unknowingly clung to Aerin desperately as tears flowed out of me in torrents, and deep sobs racked my body, as I plunged into a pit of darkness so deep I didn’t know if I’d survive it.

I don’t know how long this went on for, but eventually, my tears slowed as Aerin kept gently rubbing my back and sides, and let me lay my head on her chest, clinging to the steady beat of her heart that I could hear through all the noise in my head and heart.

She continued to stroke my hair and back, keeping me enveloped in a protective embrace.

Finally, she asked, “What was that about, honey?”

This is it. Whatever happens to us, I hope you’ll understand that I loved you, Aerin, with a madness and purity that I’m still trying to understand.

I drew a deep breath, still shuddering slightly from the tears I shed, and answered her, “About seven years ago, I was diagnosed with melanoma.”

    “And –“

“And I received treatment for it, including surgery, because they’d had to slice off parts of my nose, which is where they found it first.”

“So that’s why you’re so beautiful: plastic surgery,” she said lightly, nervously, but added quickly, “I was just kidding, baby.”

I smiled and kissed her chest through her blouse. She continued stroking my hair.

    “So –“

“So I thought that we’d manage to kill the cancer, and I was told that since we’d manage to catch it early, and were aggressive in treating it, doctors were fairly confident at that time that we’d been successful.”

Her sigh of relief was audible. My insides clenched, and I almost lost my nerve in telling her what was next.

      • Here in spirit. But this is about a few special L words that play out in a couple’s life in another part of town. In the fringes of the world of the series I’ve been writing; but different. Hope you like it.

    1. Will try this again. Left a message about 4:00 this morning and something happened, it’s not posted. My message was to thank you for posting such a beautiful love story. And that I hope this story will be continued we would like to know what happens to Aerin in the future. Thanks for sharing.

    2. Dainty, Hellbent, and new friends: thanks for the comments. Honestly: was tough to pull this together, but it was worth it. Am v glad you liked it. Ok. I hear you. It may take a while for an update on her story, but it will be coming.

      • Well this was a pleasant surprise. I am always seeking an episode from your creativity. So much, I had to buy a smaller electronic device so that I might read your input on the go. Now, for me buying another electronic anything is saying a lot. I am one of the “dial phone” “get up and change the channel” “do not Text me and expect an answer” old school DIE HARD. But, your writing genius persuaded me to become a mobile reader at my neighborhood “coffee house.” Please continue to write

    3. Beautiful story. I could feel Aerin’s struggle. I would love to read about the 18 months in between their first time and Chris’ final moments. I sure it would be moving.
