Nobis Pacem Chapter 1
“Wait a second … you said you thought that you’d manage to kill the cancer?” she asked.
“So which is it? You thought you killed it? Or did you kill it?” she asked. She embraced me tightly, as if bracing us for a blow.
“I have periodic check-ups to monitor things –“
“Yeah, and?”
“And I heard from my doctor yesterday that the latest tests showed a blip in something.”
I could feel one of her arms let go of me, although the other one maintained a tight embrace around my back. I imagined she’d touch her forehead, and rubbed her eyebrows, just the way I’d seen her do many times over the past two months, when she was worried or anxious about something.
“A blip –“ she prompted me, in a tight voice.
“A blip in my blood tests. Outside of the normal range. He said it was hard to tell if it meant anything, so he’s scheduled a battery of tests that he’d like to run on me tomorrow morning, to help us understand what could be going on.”
There was no way I could sugarcoat this. And I could feel her mental wheels churning.
I thought, “so this is how things could end between us? Happens here, now, tonight, on my couch?”
We’d crossed a certain point in those special relationships that come once in a lifetime. We would either go forward together. Or we would part. She would go on and find someone to forge a lasting relationship with – she was young and beautiful and would attract creatures like a honeypot. And once she finds someone, I can convince myself to be happy for her. Of course I can. Yeah, go on and tell yourself that, Chris.
I pushed myself up away from her and sat on the other end of the couch.
She remained relaxed, laid back against the cushions, eyes shut, arms rested on her forehead.
She was right in saying that I respected and cherished her. So I knew that I didn’t need to tell her stupid things like, “At least we didn’t have sex to complicate this.”
Or, “I shouldn’t have started coming around at all. I should’ve just let things be after I handed you over to Jules that night.”

Bette and tina????
Here in spirit. But this is about a few special L words that play out in a couple’s life in another part of town. In the fringes of the world of the series I’ve been writing; but different. Hope you like it.
What a beautiful story! Your writing is such a treat to read as you evoke every emotion.
Will try this again. Left a message about 4:00 this morning and something happened, it’s not posted. My message was to thank you for posting such a beautiful love story. And that I hope this story will be continued we would like to know what happens to Aerin in the future. Thanks for sharing.
What an amazing story ! So glad I stumbled upon this treasure !
Sad and sweet -but you said it complete.
Dainty, Hellbent, and new friends: thanks for the comments. Honestly: was tough to pull this together, but it was worth it. Am v glad you liked it. Ok. I hear you. It may take a while for an update on her story, but it will be coming.
Well this was a pleasant surprise. I am always seeking an episode from your creativity. So much, I had to buy a smaller electronic device so that I might read your input on the go. Now, for me buying another electronic anything is saying a lot. I am one of the “dial phone” “get up and change the channel” “do not Text me and expect an answer” old school DIE HARD. But, your writing genius persuaded me to become a mobile reader at my neighborhood “coffee house.” Please continue to write
Beautiful story. I could feel Aerin’s struggle. I would love to read about the 18 months in between their first time and Chris’ final moments. I sure it would be moving.
