Chapter 8 – Mid October
The steak dinner was a big hit with Daniel and John David. All the foods had been cooked outdoors and they ate on the lanai. Margaret was impressed with the variety of vegetables which Bette managed to include in the meal. Bette, Tina and Margaret had been too full to enjoy the dessert and the boys decided they would wait a couple hours to have theirs as well. They both went upstairs to see if there was a movie they would like to see in the collection they had brought from New York.
After the movie, the boys asked for their dessert. Bette, Tina and Margaret prepared coffee and dessert for the family. After the boys finished, they asked to be excused as they wanted to go to bed. They wanted to get up at their usual time and begin their studying. These were mid-term exams and they needed to review five subjects. Daniel believed that they had had a significant break from their school work on Friday evening and they would take another one after dinner on Saturday and after lunch on Sunday. He hoped that Monday night and Tuesday night would be light review or subjects like social studies and his science class. His math and English class were basically solving problem type test. If you knew the concepts, you could solve the problem or write the essay or pick the right answer.
John David was nervous going into the weekend. But by the time, Bette and Tina took him home on Sunday afternoon, he seemed confident that he was ready for his exams.
Tina had taken most of Saturday afternoon to review and crosscheck Bette’s document reference. She had suggested a word or two changes for Bette’s write up. She then looked at the exhibits which would actually be attached and agreed with Bette as to their significance. Tina was particularly pleased with the transcripts of the interviews with Gabriel Scott and Harriett Myers. They then put it away and agreed that on Sunday morning they would print a final copy for Bette to take to school and get copies on good paper stock and have them bound. Bette decided that there should be 10 copies in the event that David (Kit’s son) and his girls or Angie or Daniel should want a copy of their own at some future date. Tina did write a preface to be included before the chapters but after the table of contents. Tina insisted that Bette take full credit as the author.

This is such a lovely story.
I love how attentive Bette and Tina are to each other and their family. Margaret has fitted in well and become part of the family and I have a feeling her and Mary are going to become close friends as well.
Oh well, off to Bear Mountain for fun and relaxation…can’t wait , thank you !
Janice… Both Bette and Tina were raised without a caring mother during their childhood. Tina’s mother although present had no interest in her children. So they both have somewhat subconsciously been looking for mother figures in their lives. Peggy has taken on that role for Bette until she found Mary. Her relationship with Mary has been long distance and been evolving. So now that they live in Los Angeles along with Paris and Kit, it seems like a natural progression for Mary to move to Los Angeles. Margaret joining the household is an act of the universe and for Tina gives her a surrogate mother figure. Yes, Margaret is a wonderful addition to the family. She and Mary provide companionship for each other so that they do not feel that they are a burden on Bette and Tina. They fill a need for each of them to have a social partner in the household as well as the family. And the house is large enough to provide each member some private space when that is desired as well. It is the ideal arrangement for both of them in their stage of life. However, Bette and Tina want both of these women to have their independence and lead the lives they wish to live for as long as they are able. You see, they really are capable of giving support and comfort and yet the space to lead their own lives. Margaret is the ideal person to assist Mary with this monumental move in her life. And both Mary and Margaret are getting the family back in their life which they both deeply desire. I particularly wanted Bette and Tina to realize and act that both of these women are adults capable of directing their own lives and not children or additional dependents.
