6 Months- chapter 19
She headed straight back to her office unloading her bags and plugging her laptop in. Just as she reached for the phone to check her messages, she heard the front door open. She instinctively looked up at the video monitor mounted on the wall in her office, but saw that it was not on. James had had it installed so that Bette could see who was coming in without leaving her office, but had turned it off when he left last night, and she certainly had no idea of how to turn it on.
“James?” she called out.
There was no reply.
Bette heard a soft thud coming from the other room and stood up to see what had made the noise.
As she came out of her office and rounded the hallway to see into the main gallery, she realized that she had forgotten to turn the lights on. There was a faint light coming in from the front windows, but not enough to make out much in the way of images. Just as she turned to reach for the light switches, she heard a slight whimper. She flicked the lights on, turned towards the sound and could not believe what was in front of her.
“Tina?” she whispered.
Tina was ten feet in front of her, a bag lying next to her feet, looking neither coherent nor aware of her surroundings.
There was a steady stream of tears flowing down her face, but aside from the whimper that Bette had just heard, nothing else.
Tina was trembling but she knew that there was nothing that she could do to stop it. Her body was exhausted and Tina did not know how much more time her legs were going to give her. She looked at Bette, and her breath was taken away, just like so many years ago. She was beautiful, standing there with that expression on her face. Tina could not decipher the expression, but also knew that she was not in much of a state to try and do so. She could not look away from Bette, could not have possibly torn her eyes from her, even if she had wanted to. And she did not want to. She was afraid that if she looked away, even if only for a millisecond, she would disappear. She didn’t even want to blink.
