    6 Months- chapter 19

“Hey Bette” he said into his cell after only one ring.

    “Hey, where are you?”

    “Right outside”

“What?” Bette asked in a confused voice.

“I was about to come in when I saw Tina and decided to wait outside.  I have the guys out here with me also” he patiently explained.

“I see” Bette said, finally understanding.  “James, I need just about two minutes and then we will be out.  Jimmy is on his way here and so will be out front any second.”

“He is actually pulling up as we speak”, James said.

“OK, thanks.  Like I said, two minutes max.”

“Bette” he said, “take all of the time that you need.  We’re fine out here”.

    “Thanks.”

    “Not a problem” he smiled.

Bette hung the phone up to see Tina still watching her.

“Tina, I have to go in my office to get my things.  Will you be ok here?”

Tina slightly nodded and said “I will be here”.

Bette quickly turned and hurried to her office.  She grabbed all of her things that she had just put down, looked at her laptop, and decided to leave it.  She could always come back for it if she decided that she needed it.

She did one last look around to be sure that she had gotten everything and turned to go back out to the main gallery.

Tina was seated as she had left her, and Bette kneeled down in front of her and said, “Are you ready to go?”

Tina looked at her and nodded her head yes.

Bette, with her bag on one shoulder, grabbed Tina’s duffle bag and then put a protective arm around Tina’s waist.  Tina buried her head in Bette’s neck and just allowed herself to be lead.

Once outside, Jimmy had the back door open.  She handed him the bags to be placed in the trunk while instructing him of their destination, and gently pushed Tina onto the back seat.  She quickly turned and saw James holding the guys at bay until he knew that it was all clear.  She gave him a slight nod, which he returned with a smile that offered encouragement.

Bette followed Tina into the backseat and allowed the door to be closed behind her.  Tina was once again looking at her, as if to ask permission.  Bette raised her arm to allow Tina a place to put her head.  Tina immediately fell into Bette’s embrace, getting as close to her body as possible.

Neither said a word until Tina softly said, “Bette, I can’t do this anymore”.

    “Do what?” Bette questioned.

“Be without you” was Tina’s reply.

Bette did not say anything as she knew a response was not necessary.  She simply put her hand on Tina’s head, rubbed it gently, and put her head on the back of the seat, allowing her body to relax for the short ride to the hotel.  It was a break that she knew was temporary, but decided to take it while Tina did the same.

Bette found comfort in the fact that she knew that at least for now, Tina was finally finding some rest.
