Tina looks back at her and smiles.

(Tina) I know who you are Bette

Bette looks at her and frowns and Tina smiles.

(Tina) You made a speech earlier

(Bette smiles) Right

Tina extends her hand and Bette takes it.

(Tina) I’m Tina

Their hands remain together a little longer than is usual as they both smile at the other.

(Bette) Are you here with someone Tina?

(Tina) Well, I assume you know your guest list, and I’m not on it

Tina shrugs.

(Tina) So I guess I must be

Bette nods and looks at her curiously for a moment.

(Tina smiles) I’m Helena Peabody’s plus one

(Bette) Ah

(Tina) You know each other?

(Bette nods) Yes, I think everyone knows Helena

Tina smiles and raises her eyebrows.

(Tina) Yes, you’re probably right about that

Tina’s attention is drawn across the room and she smiles and then glances back to Bette.

(Tina) Speaking of Helena

Tina nods towards Helena standing on the other side of the room, facing away from them and in conversation with an intense-looking woman.

(Tina) I should go, that thing Helena is doing with her arm is her signal that she needs me to save her

Bette frowns as she watches Helena twisting her left arm awkwardly.

(Bette) Do you think you should come up with a signal that doesn’t make her look quite so strange?

Tina laughs and has a sip of wine.

(Tina) Probably. But I don’t think she realises how funny she looks, and I always get a kick out of it

They meet eyes and smile.

(Tina) Well good luck with the rest of your night. Everything has been wonderful by the way

(Bette smiles) Thank you

Tina smiles at her as she moves away, pausing to place her empty glass on the tray of a passing waiter before crossing the floor to Helena. Bette frowns as she watches Tina approach, placing her hand on Helena’s shoulder as Helena turns and smiles at her affectionately while wrapping her arm around Tina’s back and resting her hand comfortably on her hip.

The following Saturday night, the Planet. Bette enters the bar and scans the room for her friends. She spots Alice sitting at a table scrolling through her phone and sipping on a drink, and makes her way over.
