Chapter 13

The next week, Bette’s house, Bette and Tina are preparing dinner together in the kitchen. Bette is chopping vegetables at the island bench while Tina stands over the stove top.

(Tina) So it sounds like everything is coming together?

Bette sighs.

(Bette) I think so. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise that the artist wanted things arranged a week out. I don’t think I’ve had so many last minute disasters with a show before

(Tina) You’re managing it though?

(Bette smiles) I am. I’m trying to follow your example and keep a cool head, and trust my staff more

Bette shrugs and Tina smiles.

(Bette) And how’s your week going? Chaos as usual?

(Tina smiles) Yes, I love it though

Bette raises her eyebrows and smiles.

(Bette) I know you do

They smile at each other.

(Tina) Well, I can’t wait to see what you’ve accomplished anyway, I’ve been looking forward to it for weeks

Tina smiles at her before returning her attention to the stove, and Bette watches her for a moment.

(Bette) Have you put much thought into how we might act on Saturday? Towards each other I mean. Could we have a conversation about that?

Tina looks back to her.

(Tina) Oh

They hold each other’s gaze.

(Tina) Of course. Well I know you’ll be very busy, so I don’t really expect to see much of you. And I’ve organised to go with Helena

Tina shrugs as she moves to the bench and picks up some dishes and Bette continues to watch her.

(Bette) What would you think about going with me?

Tina stops and looks over at her with raised eyebrows.

(Tina) As your date?

Bette nods.

(Bette) Yes

Tina frowns as she moves towards the sink.

(Tina) Baby, we don’t attend work events together. And this is sort of beyond a work event. It’s a huge night for you

(Bette shrugs) Which is precisely why I want to share it with you

Tina looks over her shoulder at her uncertainly as she rinses the dishes at the sink.

(Bette) Just hear me out

Tina frowns as she listens.

(Bette) I’m not angling to change anything, or asking for anything more from you. I promise. But I’ve been thinking about it. Within the boundaries of what we’re doing we basically act however we like, right?
